Shannon rolled her shoulders and looked down the street for the bus. A flash of colour on the snowy sidewalk caught her eye. A bouquet of lavender roses lay discarded on the ground. She didn’t understand how someone could be so careless with something that took so much thought.
As she stared at them, their petals broken and slowly scattering on the wind, she wondered what it would feel like to be the person someone bought flowers for—then immediately felt foolish at the thought.

Elvira stepped up to their table with a pitcher of wine. A beautiful Mestizo flower she was, ripe to become a reckless young man’s conquest. She refilled each cup with a natural flirt of a smile before REDACTED roped her in by the waist. “Come sit, my sweet,” he said. “You do proper service to this old man.” He squeezed her tight and kissed her cheek before he set her free, and he noted how his guests corrected their postures, their eyes lingering on her lithe body as she took her leave.

“Your wife approves?” Martin asked with a nod in the girl’s direction.

REDACTED set a deadly gaze upon both of them. “She’s my daughter.”

Like the rest, Sir Chrisen was described with mighty feats of bravery, skill, and honor. Yet there were as many descriptions detailing his physical beauty. They said his hair flowed like the rivers and shined like the sun. Only Lady Juine, the Queen of King Andur, was said to be fairer, but the difference was so negligible that Sir Chrisen had even pretended to her in one story to act as bait for some cruel cyclopian king.

“If there was one, I’d say Sir Chrisen would be it. Though I don’t understand why she’d lie to Andur about that. They’re close friends.”

Somewhere along their route the air shifted. It was subtle, hardly noticeable until Jarek looked at the hue of his scales. What was red and gold was still red and gold, but there was a subtle blue to it. As if colored lenses had been placed before his eyes.

His steps felt lighter. The crunch under his feet sounded softer. He blinked as he surveyed their surroundings. The air shimmered like the space above a roaring fire. This oddity vanished under scrutiny only to reappear in the corner of his eye as if taunting him.

“Maybe he’s not lying,” Quinn said finally as they passed two trees spread apart to form a natural entrance. The air around them danced in the glade beyond and the blue tinge grew stronger. Whatever weights holding Jarek’s shoulder seemed to evaporate, leaving him in such awe he almost missed Quinn’s next words. “Maybe Sir Chrisen is just being who he is.”

“King Andur would understand,” Jarek said after regaining his senses, “He accepted Sir Gulkin and he’s half-ogre.”

“You can’t be half-ogre,” Quinn said, hauling himself up the thick branch of a nearby sycamore. His movements shook leaves and whirlybird seeds over the grass underneath. "That's not how that works.”

“It is a fiction,” Jarek said, taking a seat under the tree. He’d never climbed a tree and cloaks didn’t seem helpful for the task. “It’s allowed to be, well, fantastical.”

Ashrah acquiesced; the lioness had proved itself a valiant warrior, and for now, that was all that mattered to her. Should it wish to join her again, she would welcome it. Another reason had brought her to these lands, however. “How may I wield the Mystic Arts to combat Ulorzz?”

Nightwolf stood and stretched. “Walk with me. And as you do, feel the energy around you. Do not try to control it. Allow yourself to simply feel it.”

They crossed the undulating field in silence except for that tweeting chant, the light-and-darkness anomaly ever-present in the corner of Ashrah’s eyes. She ignored it, concentrating instead on the grass brushing her feet and the breeze grazing her skin, and as she passed beside a tree, she placed her hand on it. The trunk was firm but smooth, and when she removed her hand, she discovered a dent in its shape that faded as quickly.
