From WIP 2 - Wishing You Knew As someone said the last time I shared this snip, "Someone get Shannon some flowers!" 🪻🌹🌷🌼💐 #WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic
Shannon rolled her shoulders and looked down the street for the bus. A flash of colour on the snowy sidewalk caught her eye. A bouquet of lavender roses lay discarded on the ground. She didn’t understand how someone could be so careless with something that took so much thought.
As she stared at them, their petals broken and slowly scattering on the wind, she wondered what it would feel like to be the person someone bought flowers for—then immediately felt foolish at the thought.

New blog! As an editor, I think deleting all adverbs is bad writing (and self-editing) advice. Writing is about making choices based on your intended meaning and style of writing.

Why Deleting All Adverbs is Bad Writing Advice
Have you heard the common writing advice to delete all -ly adverbs? That’s bad writing advice. Adverbs have a place in writing and should be used purposefully, not banned.

#pretendpanel First and foremost, me. I write because it makes me happy. I don't write to please anyone else. I try not to pay attention to all the things in my books readers say they hate, because it's for me. But I also write for community because queer stories matter and should be shared/told.

#LesFicFri Apparently 'glance' is one of my over-used words, so it was hard to narrow down. Went with a somewhat vague snip of Capt Hook supervising her crew in the midst of a downpour. #SapphicSnips #WriteSky #WritingSnippet
Just as I began drumming my fingers on the railing, someone, Payne by the sound of his voice, called out from the bow, “Eyes starboard!”

“How many?”

“Um…four…no, maybe five?” Payne calls but didn’t sound sure and I frowned.

I looked towards him to gauge his position on the deck and where he was looking and called out, “Adeola.”

Our sharpshooter, a gorgeous lanky woman from Botswana, nodded once and sprinted through the rain to Payne’s side, raising her ridiculously long rifle and peering down its scope. A second later, she called, “Counting five. Maybe a killy an’ a half out.”

“Shot?” I inquired.

A beat, then Adeola replied, “Nah, no shot. They’ve people with ‘em.”

Beanie and I shared a glance. “Pitits?” I asked in response.

Another tense beat and Adeola called, “Nah, they look grown. One of ‘em’s carrying bags.”

“Delivery,” Beanie said, and I gave him a terse nod. They were early this year.

I hate naming things with a passion. WIP 1 only got it's title officially like three (ish) weeks ago. I finished writing the first draft almost a year ago. WIP 2 got its title for a pitch event & I think it'll stick? WIP 3 I had the title before I started writing. All get nicknames. #writingQ

Ahn-Me studied her. “Not gonna ask why I want it gone?”

Ceres finished her friend’s drink, setting it back on the counter with a definitive tap. “Nope. I trust you.”

The lines of Ahn-Me’s face relaxed just a little bit at the vote of confidence. “Deal.”

Ceres glanced down at her own shirt and adjusted her cleavage. Ran her fingers through her hair. Pinched her cheeks in the bar’s mirror. “Without a mess, you said?”

Ahn-Me arched an eyebrow at Ceres’ primping. “If you can.”

“Please, it’s me,” she tossed over her shoulder.

“That’s what I’m afraid of, Shark Girl!”

Smooth, Geni 🙄 "mask" #sapphiclineshare from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions
"Well, shall we?" Kallista gestured in the direction of the hatch leading to the galley.

"Oh. I'm actually scheduled for the second dinner service." Geni's polite smile covered her true feelings, and just as she saw Kallista about to speak, she quipped, "I suppose as captain you could have Madelia make an exception for me this once, but then again, we wouldn't want to go around breaking the rules for me, would we?"

Geni cringed inwardly as soon as the words were out of her mouth, with all their layers of meaning. A crestfallen crease marred Kallista's brow for a moment, and then was replaced by the same mask of politeness Geni had been wearing herself. "Quite right, my good Doctor. I've had a very pleasant day with you. Good evening."

#SapphicLineShare **Mask** She does get that a lot. #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #LesFic
Shannon caught the briefest flash of annoyance on Jacqueline’s face before it vanished behind her polished mask. If Shannon had blinked, she would’ve missed it.
“No, sorry—this is my cousin Cecilia from Montreal,” she answered before Jacqueline could.
Jacqueline blinked, then, like a chameleon, changed her expression again. She turned to the man, her brow furrowed. “Je suis désolée. Je ne parle pas très bien anglais. Qu’est-ce que vous avez dit?” To Shannon’s ear, the French accent sounded flawless.
“Oh. Excusez-moi,” he said with a thick accent. He turned to Shannon as the official translator. “She looks remarkably like the singer Jacqueline Lamont.”
“Oui, merci. Bonne journée. Je n’ai pas envi de vous parler, celui-là. Que la foule est fatigante se soir!” Jacqueline added, biting back a laugh.
Shannon’s eyebrows rose. “She gets that a lot.”

Everyone was staring at Izzy. How long had Trevor been holding out his hand, waiting for her to shake it? She stole a glance at Julie. Her face was unreadable, but she looked like she’d been hit with a two-by-four.

From WIP 2 - Wishing You Knew If only Jackie knew a nurse who can help with that injured hand 🤔 #WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic
The night before, Jacqueline had started moving Mary’s bedroom to the first floor. Rebecca had refused to help, and Jacqueline had no one else to ask. When she tried to move her mother’s bed frame, her hand caught and twisted, sending white-hot pain through her arm. She’d hissed an expletive, and the taste of soap in her mouth from the last time she’d sworn in her mother’s house came rushing back as a memory she’d sooner forget. She abandoned the attempt, deciding to try again the next day.

For a moment, it looked like Izzy was finally letting her guard down. Maybe she believed her. Maybe this was the first step towards repairing what Julie had broken. A flicker of something warm and familiar appeared in Izzy’s eyes.
“Julie…” Izzy began.
The soft, unguarded way she said her name made Julie’s heart and hopes lift.
Then it was gone. Izzy blinked, then straightened, and the warmth vanished, leaving only a cold emotional distance.
Julie felt the words before they were spoken, and her heart sank.
Izzy shook her head. “I don’t think so.” Her eyes lingered for a heartbeat too long before she turned away and continued packing her bag.
