#Sniptober Dropping in for this one… Helena has gone for a 3am walk in the woods alone. Cuz Goth. But wait! She hears two people talking and hides! (Poorly.) It’s her crush talking to some guy as they patrol the woods! And her crush looks up…

“Yeah,” she said absently, apparently still talking to her companion. “I know what you mean.”
Helena’s heart pounded in her mouth, leaving an unexpectedly pleasant aftertaste. Kiandra stood there for a moment, pinning her with an open and searching gaze, then started walking again. She looked down at her footing for just a second and then back up at Helena with the slightest play of a smile on her full lips. The young man hadn’t seen her.
She realized now what she must look like, hiding in the woods, ducked behind a thin tree that provided little real cover, like a villain in a cartoon. But the couple moved on and Helena stood in the dark feeling completely ridiculous. A cold drop of rain freed from the leaves above smacked onto the back of her neck and ran down her shirt, eliciting a fierce shiver. Giving up the night as lost, she turned back towards the dorm.

“Rayna Clay? Please be there. You need to let me in.” The voice was unfamiliar, but they clearly knew which apartment they were looking for.
I rose from the couch, steadied myself against the wall, and staggered over to the door. Through the peephole, I saw an unfamiliar man. He was pretty. Tall and muscular with tousled, sandy-brown hair and exceedingly blue eyes.
An incubus. Who knew my name. And where I lived. There was no explanation for this that wasn’t bad for me.
I rubbed my hand over my face, suddenly wishing very hard that I hadn’t been drinking for hours. I had a dangerous job, and if someone had shown up for revenge… I checked the bolts on the reinforced door; they were all in place. So, I stepped away, preparing to return to the couch and pretend he wasn’t there.
“Look,” the incubus pleaded. “If you don’t let me in, I’m a dead man. Please, I think they followed me here.”

I opened my eyes to find the incubus staring at me, wide-eyed and a little frantic. Like a small animal in the moment before it was hit by a car.
“Well, don’t just stand there.” I gestured to the bodies. “Help me drag them inside, before the neighbors get curious.”
He hesitated for a moment, before finally grabbing a leg and pulling the closest incubus the rest of the way through the doorway.
“How did you do that?” he asked.
“Do what? Hit two guys with a stick?” I rolled my eyes, retrieving the flex cuffs from my kitchen and binding the two men in the middle of my living room.
“Why in hell didn’t you just shoot them?” He nodded at the gun on the table by the door.
“Because then the neighbors call the cops. That gets messy. And then I have to move. Do you know how hard it is to find a decent apartment in this city?”
He regarded me with a mixture of horror and confusion. I sighed. Civilians.

*What is the ecosystem like in the sense of plants/animals/crops? Bonus question: What’s most likely to kill you / is the apex predator?*

So some of this ties back into stuff I’ve already discussed with regards to food, inasmuch as a lot of crops and animals wind up on the tables in Sacaan – in terms of crops, we have root vegetables, cabbage, cauliflower, rhubarb, rye, barley, wheat, rice (though that’s a more common staple further south), and a whole passel of berries of various sweetnesses; in terms of food animals (as opposed to fish), we’re talking sheep, goats, yak, deer, reindeer, moose, boar, rabbits, chicken, geese, porpoises, smaller whales, and seals (not all of which are domesticated, obviously).

Aside from these, the other animals which call the caldera home include a variety of smaller carnivores (fishers, martens, stoats, weasels, foxes, and othersuch), as well as hares, lynxes, wolverines, bobcats, wolves, bears, and a few more unusual species, including antlered rabbit-like animals known as jackalopes. Bears in particular are sacred to Earth Brother – while Sacaask folk don’t shy away from killing them if they attack people or venture dangerously close to settlements, they don’t go hunting them unnecessarily, and there’re some very specific prayers and rites which need to be followed in the event of a bear having to be killed.

The other two sacred animals are eagles (sacred to Sky Brother) and orcas (sacred to Ocean Brother) – again, if Sacaask folk find themselves in a situation where they need to kill one of these animals, there’re rites and prayers which need to be undertaken in order to ritually purify the people involved and make amends to the deity in question.

(That also answers the part of your question regarding apex predators somewhat, given the bear and the orca are absolutely the apex predators of their particular environments).

"Tonight is about us."

"And what have you got planned?"

"Planned makes it sound like I expected this," Strope chuckled and then sighed as Halla leaned over slightly so her head lay on his shoulder. Even without the aid of Cailo, Strope could smell the scent of fresh clothes permeating from Halla. "First, some food."

They stopped at the first food vendor. "We can start here. Have you tried mixed rice before?" Strope was already pulling out a few coins from the coin-loop tied into his pocket.

"What is it?" Halla peered at the cart that was crammed with various tubs of food and one giant vat of warm rice.

"You pick two or three things from there and they'll mix it into the rice and pour sauce over it. It's delicious," Strope was already trying to decide what he'd have and settled for shredded wabbahleh meat and finely sliced spring onions. "They have scrambled eggs."

"I am known for liking eggs," Halla was smiling. "Alright, eggs and…what are those little round purple things?"

"Pop beans," the vendor replied. "Like a kidney bean but they've got this juice in the middle."

"That sounds too extravagant for me," Halla murmured. "Just egg please."

The vendor didn't question Halla's decision but shot Strope a quizzical look as if to wonder how anyone could not like pop beans. He shrugged and took his own bowl and gave the other to Halla. "We'll have to eat them here. Can't keep these." Strope indicated to the bowls and Halla peered at the her own, pushing aside clumps of rice and egg with her spoon. "What're you checking for?"

"What I can only assume is the room at the bottom of those stairs is a swathe of black on screen seven. It’s not just that the room is dark, either. It’s like the blackness is seething with bugs, bristling with the hair of something too big for the space. Only the corners are empty, glowing an eerie blue like Gene’s set up a blacklight.
And then the blackness moves.
I bolt all the way to the door, gripping the sides of the frame as what could be a giant-ass cat curves its back against the confines of the wall, like one of Josh’s rats moving in its sleep. The shot seems to defy physics—I can’t tell if whatever that animal is takes up the whole room, or if the camera is somehow oriented inside a tiny box filming something smaller. I can’t tell what’s wall and what’s ceiling. As the thing settles, I glimpse a nugget of leg or knee. #WIPSnips I don't have 'rice' so here's a segment about some crops and food that a region eats.

"What do they typically eat at Surge's Break?"

"Fruit trees, crops that take well to the high water table, the banks of the Sanguine swell when it rains."

He knew of the Sanguine. The largest river that ran through their realm and was terribly prone to flooding in places. Surge's Break was on a hill that overlooked it. Fish wasn't a rarity despite the different varieties.

"What was your favorite dish at home?" he tried.

"I was fond of a chickpea spread we would have with lunch. It went well with the flatbreads our kitchen would make. The yeasted breads you have here are nice."

From very early in Wolf and Leo's story, establishing their mentor/protector and mentee dynamic, and building a friendship. I had no idea what mortgage advisors earned, but I was confident he wasn’t taking home anywhere near what I was. The fact treating him felt nice, was incidental and not to be dwelled on.

Pool was fun, for me. He pouted because I beat him three games out of three despite trying to put me off by openly perving at me while I was taking shots. I had to tell him off three times for inappropriate comments. Twice, I caught him looking at me when he thought I couldn’t see, and it appeared he’d genuinely convinced himself he was into me. Bizarre, but he apologised for the inappropriate comments when corrected, and promised he respected the boundaries of the contract.

We ate the most enormous takeaway, sharing curries, naans, poppadum, two types of rice, and so many pickles and sides I lost count. Leo ate like he drank, fast and in large quantities. He ate almost as much as I did, and I had no idea how. Where did it go? He should look like a python after a big meal.

The pride he’d lost at pool was regained while thrashing me at rummy. I swear he’d have stayed up all night but, eventually, I had to sleep or risk a migraine.

‘Right, I’ve got to call it a night. Help yourself to drinks, or food if you can somehow face eating.’

‘Food will not be required before tomorrow, but I might grab a glass of water. I’ve had a nice day, thank you.’

‘Me too.’

‘I know I pushed it a bit at the pub, but I’ve been a really good boy tonight, haven’t I?’

He was fishing. I shouldn’t give him what he was looking for, but it was late and I wanted him to end the night happy.

‘You’ve been a very good boy. And you’re one hell of a rummy player. Night, Leo.’

‘Night, Wolfie.’ As expected, the good boy made him grin like a cheshire cat.

We’d had a fun day, and I enjoyed his company. That was fine because we were becoming friends, which would help with the trust required for me to be a good mentor. What wasn’t fine was my enjoyment of his flattery. I would need to reign that in quickly.

I wake up on the floor outside Ruby’s room, notebook clutched in my hand, pink motes drifting playfully through shafts of mid-morning sun. Not sure when I drifted off, but probably only a few hours ago. I should have resisted. There’s too much to do yet. She’s still gone. Twenty-four hours now. God, Jesus, twenty-four hours. What makes me think I’ve earned rest?
I check my notebook, hoping that in the night I came up with some kind of brilliant insight that will set me on the right path today. But pretty much every sentence I’ve written ends in a question mark. Often several. Some of it is unreadable. No great revelations occurred in the dark, then.
I head downstairs to the kitchen, pour myself some cereal and scan through the photos I’ve taken on my phone, distractedly spilling milk as I search them for something, anything, that might give me a starting point on this. If my FOI request doesn’t get flagged as an obvious load of horseshit then that will provide a lot more to go on with, but I can’t wait for it to get here.
LookTwice. That’s who I need to be talking to. They’ve already been working this case, or should have been, and I need to know what Ruby said to them. I’m sure getting them to tell me will be no big deal. Big corporations are noted fans of broke trans women poking their noses into their business, after all.

Possible, I suppose, if you left the dirty work to your men. But I saw the way they spoke to you; they respect you, and they wouldn’t if you were the man I just described. The only conclusion left is that you don’t wield a weapon because you don’t need one. Am I wrong?”
D’orril chuckled softly. “No, I’ll admit that you aren’t. Perhaps I should be more careful, carry a weapon, at least for show. Wouldn’t want the queen to find out and decide that I am worth her attention. I don’t fancy being drained dry and stuck in her tower.”
“Can’t say I blame you for that,” Nik muttered.
“Either way, you can see why I recognized his highness here. I served the crown for a long time, in their army.”
“I am still surprised that you recognize me. It was years ago, and I was much younger.” T’orrin replied.
“Weren’t we all, highness?” D’orril shrugged.
The tent flap swung open and one of the bandits carried in a platter of roasted meat, cheese-covered bread, rice, and fruit.
“Ah, our food is here. Excellent. Just set that down on the table.”

Agatha did not survive the night. Nobody confirmed her death. But Agatha didn’t return the next morning. And when Blair asked after her, nobody would discuss it. Some of the women pretended not to know who Blair meant. Others told her to change the subject.

Blair raged in her heart. She knew that the countess would have fed, and killed, one of the women whether Blair had joined in or not. Maybe Blair had prevented the countess for killing more women. Maybe not. Blair didn’t know. But another captive had died, and Blair had failed to protect her.

Perhaps we should have eaten more veggies, huh?” Sweat painted her brow as she dragged him over the rim of the wheelbarrow and managed to get him into the dented container, one arm and both legs dangled over the side. With a curl of her lip, she grabbed the handle of the scissors that poked out of his neck and tugged it free. A splash of blood followed and drained her shirt.”
