ICYMI - the latest monthly averaged observations of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄)... (two of the primary greenhouse gases that warm our planet) Data from gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/
Line graph time series of monthly global carbon dioxide and methane abundance from January 1984 through 2026. There are seasonal cycles and long-term increasing trends for both greenhouse gases. Current carbon dioxide levels are at 429 ppm, and current methane levels are at 1938 ppb.

Just a quick look at a cross-section of temperature trends in the lower atmosphere during the month of August. The bottom of the y-axis is the lower troposphere, and the upper portion is reaching into the stratosphere. The x-axis is latitude. Data is provided by ERA5.
Graphic showing a vertical cross-section of zonal mean temperature trends for all latitude bands in August from 1979 through 2025. There is a long-term warming trend in the troposphere and cooling in the stratosphere. Red shading is shown for warming trends, and blue shading is shown for cooling trends.

‘Was this heatwave caused by climate change?’ – we’re asking the wrong question
Instead of asking whether climate change caused a heatwave, we should ask how much hotter it became because of fossil fuel emissions.
