There's just no way for municipalities to cover the shortfall that's developed outside of Halifax. If things stay at the same level, I'd estimate that each region outside HRM will almost certainly close at least two branches in the next three years, if not more.

So to see Minister Ritcey yesterday say "No. There's no more money for libraires." means that he and the premier are determined to see the collapse of library service as we know it. Not to be doomerism about it, but without an increase from the province, we're looking at a dramatic downscalling.

Because with the system as designed, we're all in this struggle together. From Cumberland to Halifax, Yarmouth to Sydney. We're all hurting. And if nothing changes, this is just the beginning. More libraries will close, and more layoffs are coming.

So, with that in mind, if the province were to suddenly increase the money given to libraries by 350k AVRL would see 41k of it. That wouldn't even save one of the branches. When the province gave us 800k in bridge funding last year, my region, CPL, only saw 38k. Our deficit was over 200k.
A slide form CPL's library in review presentation in April. It says: What we have cut/reduced to save money in 2026-27 (so far)
Elimination of Hoopla 38,400$
Reduced Full-time HQ staff hours by 10% 47,231$
Reduced Library material Spending 36,662$
Reduced programs 13,000$
Subtotal of reductions 135,293$

Something that's been getting me about the libraries in Annapolis Valley talking about how the province just needs to pony up 350k to save the libraries isn't quite right. Under the current funding arrangement, the province gives money to *all* libraries at once. AVRL getss 11.7% of that.
Funding for Public LIbraries in Nova Scotia, from a presentation Cumberland Public Libraries gave in April. It says "16.9 million from the province to support 79 public libraries and outreach services. Based on population with base amounts for operating and collections. It equals out to Less than $16 per person in NS per year. The same since 2020.
AVRL gets 11.7% CBRL gets 12.5% CEHPL gets 9.1% CPL gets 4.7% ECRL gets 5.6% HPL gets 32.2% PARL gets 8.4% WCRL gets 8.1%
