Heads up, Bookworms: There will likely be💀supply chain issues💀 this holiday season. So if there are specific books you have your heart set on for holiday gifting, I strongly suggest you buy/order them ahead of time (✨like now✨) rather than waiting until November/December.

holy shit, this is the whole ballgame in a single paragraph gAI systems require mass theft of copyrighted works, for the explicit purpose of replacing the market for the people they stole from, and the people in charge knew what they were doing ahead of time, and did it anyway

Filling out more Anthropic Settlement paperwork, and I still find the paltry sum each of us is getting to be totally galling. Anthropic stole the life's work of thousands of people, and they get to continue making money off of our work in perpetuity, and each of us get maybe a couple grand, tops.

I love this thread, and actually feel a little proud that my books do tend to include these types of characters. They are very useful for comedy writing and for keeping your book out of High Fantasy territory. I prefer my fantasy to be Not Unreasonably Far From the Ground.

Clue, Rocky Horror, Muppets, yes… and also The Worst Witch! And also Gabriel Knight! What a joy it has been to live in a world with Tim Curry’s characters.

I really cannot think of a greater honor than to have the Muppets say this about you upon your passing
Instagram post from the official Muppets account: Few humans have earned the title of honorary Muppet more than the legendary Tim Curry. As a performer he was unparalleled - witty, charming, unnerving, and deeply funny. We will always consider it one of our greatest treasures to have been part of Long John Silver’s crew. Thank you for everything, Tim.

Inspired by a Twitter thread, but I'm fired up, so I'm bringing it here. Author Kevin McCleod posted quite smartly that when kids can read to themselves, the act of reading aloud seems to just . . . stop. And I agree with him that that's a complete shame.

I've been trying to think of a '90s rock song that would be even weirder and more inappropriate to sing at the end of a World Cup victory than Wonderwall, and I have finally decided on Basket Case.

I don’t know how many more times I can say this, but please, everyone. Always be the biggest skeptic of your own hype. You are not a hero or a god; you are a normal person who can do good things if you do them with care and thought. Let that be enough.
They told him that he was “the guy.”

Last July, in a small town in coastal Maine, a couple of progressive, self-styled recruiters of economic populists showed up at the blue-shingled house of Graham Platner, a little-known oyster farmer and Marine veteran who lived largely off government benefits.

They knew his name from local labor organizers and activists, and they had watched a video on the internet of him talking about oysters. Struck by his left-leaning ideology, his working-class affect and his gravelly voice, they became convinced that he could win a Senate seat in Maine — and quickly persuaded Mr. Platner of the same.

The initial headhunters, Dan Moraff and Leanne Fan, and then a third out-of-state operative they called up to Maine — Morris Katz — told Mr. Platner he was “the one,” a “hero of the movement,” “a historical figure” who could be “leading a revolution,” according to half a dozen people with knowledge of their conversations.

But a clutch of people who cared about Mr. Platner were telling him something else.

It’s almost impossible to get my 6-year-old into trying a new sport (casually! At an appropriate 6 year old level!) because the intensity and focus of youth sports now starts at birth. I worry that a lot of parents are pinning their kids’ college hopes on sports, and it’s just not a productive idea.

I grew up reading Jane Yolen, as most of us did, but the phrase of hers that sticks with me is the title of her adult craft book: Take Joy. Jane had a long career, saw awards, rejections and everything in between, and knew the supreme importance of finding joy in the work. I am so grateful to her.

I can't stress this enough. Being a great writer requires you being an enthusiastic reader. Read in your genre and out of it. (Yeah, even those kinds of books you swear aren't for you occassionally. You might be surprised.) Devour as much as you can.

The thing IS actually, there are so many incredible books that do serve children, speak to children, are exciting for children to read -- but those books die the death of invisibility. The industry doesn't give them material marketing/publicity support, and gatekeepers don't find them.

The cultural specificity of a novel is part of what makes it interesting. Yes, to kids as well as adults! Novels are not timeless, art is not timeless, and that’s part of why we make and consume it!

I see uncritical support for the IOC's one time only, all or nothing, SRY gene test 'to identify men' platformed today. Fun fact about that. It's entirely possible to test positive after being pregnant with a boy. Fetal DNA can cross the placenta and linger in the maternal bloodstream for decades.

When I was in 9th grade, I had a wonderful English teacher who encouraged and supported each one of us students, but who also told us when our arguments were unsupported and challenged us to do better when our logic was weak. I wish every self-styled intellectual adult had had a teacher like this.

Writing about the connections that bind us; reading Pope Leo 👍🏻
Pope Leo XIV • @Pontifex • 1d

Within digital environments — structured to persuade — interaction is optimized to the point of rendering a real encounter supertluous; the otherness of persons in the flesh is neutralized, and relationships are reduced to functional responses. Dear friends, you, however, are real persons!
Creation itself has a body, a breath, a life to be listened to and safeguarded.

When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment.
As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
