🌟Shortlisted for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction🌟 With its haunted shoes and sheep and cats, Bora Chung's novel in ghost stories (translated by @antonhur.com) gently suggests the degree to which humanity’s efforts to control the world are themselves figments and fantasies.
A photo of the book Midnight Timetable, standing on a black shelf next to a glass vase with two pink-orange flowers and some greenery."What we can see and hear and touch in this world is very limited. And so perhaps it’s true we don’t know much about the world at all. We like to say there’s nothing new under the sun, but we don’t have the slightest inkling of how many things there are, indeed, under the sun."

We'd like your help with something. The one hundredth anniversary of Ursula's birth will take place in 2029. This may seem a long time away, but we’re already starting to think about how to celebrate Ursula’s life and art. We’d love to add your ideas to the mix—there's a brief survey here:

🌟Shortlisted for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction🌟 In Sunward, @willalex.bsky.social weaves world-expanding comedy with a vision of parental care that encompasses beings built as well as born. In his future, another way of living is possible—though getting to it is never easy.
A copy of Sunward, by William Alexander, stands on a black shelf next to a small glass vase with two orangey-pink flowers."Mercury was a messenger god, and you also carry messages across the heavens. That makes this a pilgrimage site for you, too."

'Except I don't worship him. I don't burn offerings of ox entrails in his name. I don't really believe in him.'

You don't need to, Sparkles said. Mercury is still your patron god. Every letter you deliver is an offering."

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

For anyone struggling with questions of how and whether to make, promote, or talk about art in times like these, I highly recommend a short essay by John Crowley called "Practicing the Arts of Peace."
"I didn't answer for some time, and when I did it was without much thought—or maybe with the distillation of a lot of thought that had been going on below the level of even mental speech. 'Andre,' I wrote at last, 'I was asked by somebody...""...back at the time of the invasion of Iraq how we could all just go on writing our little stories, especially we fantasists and poets, and I said that in my opinion what we were doing was practicing the arts of peace. What we want is a world in which funny fantastical stories are possible and are valued, in which there is nothing so dreadful or urgent that it causes the writing of such things to stop or be stopped. Worlds where the arts of peace can't be practiced are wounded worlds, and that's why we have to go on practicing those arts, so that our worlds don't die..."
