But if you're doing what you can--working on your craft, being a good book citizen by reading and engaging with the community thoughtfully, doing your research, knowing when to ask for help (ASK, ALREADY!)--you're approaching this right.

I see variations of this Q every now and then: "I got a sample edit from a copy editor, but they didn't give me feedback on the plot. Does this mean my story is good/should I hire someone else?" No, it means you got a sample from a copy editor, not a developmental editor, and they know their job. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If, as adults, we're not demonstrating that reading is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity, how can we expect kids to want to engage in it, too? How can they learn to love reading if it's a chore or torturous assignment fought over or rushed through to get to something else? Get caught reading.

Sometimes editing can be fairly speedy, working through the pages, making a fix or spotting a hole, landing on a solution that makes five other things fall into place. Sometimes, it involves your thoughts churning--needing to take time to let them distill into a clearer direction.
