![That, and after stewing on it, I'm one who's probably going to hold on to the fact that Spike said to Faye he wasn't going to fight Vicious to die, but rather "find out if [he's] awake", and her yelling at him about how he's stuck in the past even though he told her to let go. After everything he's been through since leaving the syndicate, he basically had nothing to lose and nothing to live for because he wasn't even sure he wasn't living a dying dream. Him surviving would be him realizing, yes, he's been awake this whole time, and now he's not shackled by his past. So, now he had to find something to live for. He has to Carry That Weight that he basically lost everything, is unshackled from the past, and now has to live and move on.
Honestly, I might even hold that the movie takes place after the finale, which is why Spike is a bit more playful, flirty, and able to actually open up with Electra. He's finally getting a chance to live life how he wants. How to explain the crew finding Ed and bringing her back?
