On this day in 1938, Walter Gretzky was born in Canning (now Blandford-Blenheim), Ontario. In his life, he helped out with many charities including the CNIB Foundation. He received the Order of Canada, and three honorary degrees. A school is also named for him. 📸 Mike Cassese

On this day in 1984, Marc Garneau became the first Canadian in space. He was aboard the Challenger from Oct. 5 to 13 as a payload specialist. He returned to space on Endeavour in 1996 and 2000. In all, he spent 29 days, two hours and one minute in space. 📸 NASA

Sass Jordan has died. Born in 1962 in England, she grew up in Montreal. Jordan had several hit songs in Canada including Rescue Me and Tell Somebody. A Juno Award winner, she also served as the honorary colonel of 417 Combat Support Squadron. (Announced on her Facebook page)

On Sept. 1, 1980, Terry Fox was forced to end his Marathon of Hope near Thunder Bay when his cancer returned. While he never got the chance to continue his run, a large memorial now honours him near where his run came to an end. youtu.be/2Ah7eE4QYgs
