In Manchester this week a church was demolished by the council. So were the windows. It is very easy to remove stained glass windows. Costs - a cherry picker and two/three people a day or two. Would they demolish a museum with artefacts in place, a gallery with paintings on the wall? #stainedglass

I’ve seen a lot of great historic doorways…this has to be one of the best! The 12th century Prior’s Door in Ely Cathedral 🤩 There’s lots of medieval painted decoration still in the cathedral and I’m sure this would once have been brightly coloured too, really bringing that intricate detail to life 😀

Thank you, Paul. Several of us went over to England for the inauguration. We felt the cost was worth while. We had already devoted 8 years to saving and preserving this great veteran. But it was difficult trying to explain to French and ex-pat supporters why the IWM hadn’t thought to say thank you.

Did you learn why it is that the IWM doesn’t feel the need to say a little ‘thank you’ to its donors? In 2016 I gave them a 27 tonne Whale section from the 1944 floating roadway our Arromanches Mulberry Harbour here in Normandy. It’s at Duxford. Never had a word of acknowledgment. Won’t do it again!

Sherborne Abbey’s ‘East End’ which at one time housed the Headmaster of Sherborne School and now contains the Lady Chapel plus a teeny teddy wing for the children to play in on Sunday mornings. The monks lived, unusually, north of the Abbey and their relationship with the townsfolk was often poor.

At Deerhurst, a kitchen in the nave and a bedroom in the chancel concealed an Anglo-Saxon chapel built in 1056 by a kinsman of Edward the Confessor. Rediscovered in 1865, it had survived hidden in plain sight - a thousand-year thread absorbed into an ordinary home.

You wrote: “It was part of the main route to Wakefield and came to be known as the 'Wakefield Gate'.” So, I assumed this was the name of the road not the gateway! I live near a place called Gatefer (Normandy) which is the track you took in the C10th-C16th to extract iron ore for smelting.

When you say “came to be known as” could the “Gate” in fact come from the Viking ‘gate’ meaning ‘the way to’… in which case it’s quite an old name?

Whitby's a good example of the typical protestant practice of the pre-Victorian Church of England. The entire church was focused on the pulpit rather than on an altar. Communion was only celebrated twice a year in most C of E churches, and even then most parishioners did not receive communion. 🧵
