1 The 21 on the bow stands for the 21st destroyer group (21dg). The first ‘2’ indicates that the ship was assigned to the Sasebo Naval District, whilst the following ‘1’ denotes that it belonged to the 1st group within that district.

According to the Russian-language Wikipedia, it appears he was born in Paris.
Everyone on board was ready. The first fighter, flying 150 metres higher, launched its attack from a range of 300 metres. It opened fire whilst in a dive. Almost simultaneously, Ply returned fire. The upper machine gun also opened fire. The German fighter jerked to one side, went into a spin and began to plummet haphazardly. At that moment, the second fighter went on the attack. Plya did not give him a chance to take aim, and the first fighter opened fire. Without changing its dive angle, the fighter swept past the ‘Muromets’ and hurtled towards the ground. The third circled for a while, turned round and flew off. Upon the ‘Muromets’ return, the entire squadron congratulated the victors.History of the First World War (continuation of the series). "Prawo Jazdy" was an alleged Polish criminal supposedly active in the Republic of Ireland. The name was listed on PULSE, a computer system used by the Garda Síochána, with at least 50 traffic violations, including speeding and parking violations, recorded across the country, but there were suspicious aspects such as each incident being associated with a different address. "Prawo Jazdy" was also listed as a name on the Fixed Charge Processing System (FCPS). An investigation was launched into this person whom the Gardaí considered to be Ireland's worst traffic violator.[1][2][3]

An internal Garda memorandum in June 2007 revealed that, upon consultation with an online Polish–English bilingual dictionary, prawo jazdy was not a personal name, but instead the Polish term for 'driving licence', misidentified by Garda officers as the traffic violator's name due to the phrase being printed at the top right-hand corner of Polish driving licences (with the licensee's name and personal details printed beneath in a smaller text size). The error became public knowledge in February 2009.[4][5][6][7]

It appears that during the Nara period, the reading of the character 吉 changed from "e" to "yoshi"; for instance, Sumiyoshi Taisha was originally known as "Suminoe Taisha." Similarly, Hiyoshi Taisha was read as "Hie," and "Hiei" is a phonetic transcription of that pronunciation.

'Winnie', named for the Prime Minister, was in place by August 1940 and 'Pooh' in February 1941. Manned by Royal Marine gunners, they were mostly employed in counter-battery fire with German batteries on the French coast.

1 There are 2 ships named USS S.P. Lee in honour of Samuel Phillips Lee. One was a Clemson-class destroyer (DD-310) completed in 1920; however, despite her name, she was lost when it ran aground on 8/9.1923, along with many other destroyers.
Samuel Phillips Lee was born in Fairfax County, Virginia, on 13 February 1812. He was appointed a Midshipman in the U.S. Navy in November 1825 and subsequently saw extensive service at sea, including combat action during the Mexican War and exploration, surveying and oceanographic duty. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he was captain of the sloop of war Vandalia in the East Indies, sailing her home on his own initiative to join the blockade of the Southern coast. Commander Lee commanded the new steam sloop USS Oneida during the New Orleans campaign and subsequent operations on the Mississippi River in the first half of 1862. In September 1862, S.P. Lee was placed in command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron with the rank of Acting Rear Admiral. He led this force for over two years, during which it was responsible for the blockade of the North Carolina coast and operations on North Carolina and Virginia inland waters, all areas of very active combat between Union and Confederate forces. Acting Rear Admiral Lee transferred to the command of the Mississippi Squadron in October 1864 and led it to the end of the Civil War in 1865. Reverting to his permanent rank of Captain after the Civil War, Lee had extensive service in the Washington, D.C., area. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1870 and retired from active service in February 1873. Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee died at Silver Spring, Maryland, on 7 June 1897.

The seven wrecked destroyers on Honda point. The lost ships were: USS Delphy (DD-261) was the flagship in the column. She ran aground on the shore at 20 knots (37 km/h). After running aground, she sounded her siren. The siren alerted some of the later ships in the column, helping them avoid the tragedy. Three men died. Eugene Dooman, a State Department expert on Japan, who survived, was aboard as a guest of Captain Watson, whom he had met in Japan. USS S. P. Lee (DD-310) was following a few hundred yards behind. She saw the Delphy suddenly stop, and turned to port (left) in response. As a result, she ran aground on the coast. USS Young (DD-312) made no move to turn. She tore her hull open on submerged rocks, and the inrush of water capsized her onto her starboard side. Twenty men died. USS Woodbury (DD-309) turned to starboard, but struck an offshore rock. USS Nicholas (DD-311) turned to port and also hit a rock. USS Fuller (DD-297) stuck next to the Woodbury. USS Chauncey (DD-296) made an attempt to rescue sailors from the capsized Young. She ran aground.

September 28, 1538:

Hayreddin Barbarossa’s Ottoman fleet faced Andrea Doria’s Holy-League fleet off Preveza. This victory secured Ottoman naval dominance in the eastern Mediterranean for the next 33 years. The Ottoman fleet consisted of 122 rowing vessels (galleys and galleons), while the Holy League fleet comprised more than 600 vessels (galleys, galleons, sailing ships). There is some variation in the sources, particularly regarding the League's ship numbers. I've taken these numbers from the Ottoman naval historian Katib Celebi's (d. 1657) Tuhfet el-kibar fi asfar el-bihar ("The Gift to Dignitaries Concerning Naval Warfare") which covers the history of Ottoman naval warfare up to the mid-17th century. The Holy League was an alliance of naval forces from Venice, Spain, the Papal States, Genoa, Maltese Knights, and the Duchy of Mantua. The Ottoman fleet incorporated experienced North African corsair personnel, particularly those associated with Algiers. Image credit:

When I arrive here while researching something, I lose the urge to write about it myself. That is because most things are already written perfectly. In short, it is a page so wonderful that it makes me envious.

Lisbon Maru www.asahi.com/articles/AST... I think footage captured from the Japanese side showing the sinking of a Japanese ship is rare.

I came across this while looking for images of the destroyer Kuri. It is a video of the Lisbon Maru, which was torpedoed by the USS Grouper (SS-214) off the coast of Shanghai on the morning of 1/10.1942; she sank 26 h later, and 845 of the 1,816 prisoners of war being transported on board drowned.
The escort destroyer Kuri.
