With the greatest of respect to @kevincarmichael.bsky.social, Justin Trudeau bent over backwards for Alberta, and burned a metric tonne of political capital to build them a pipeline (to say nothing of orphan well funds, etc), all of which earned him nothing but new invented grievances in return.
The backtracking on climate policy can’t have been easy for Carney, who served the UN as a special envoy on climate action and finance not so long ago. Activists will accuse him of abandoning the cause, and they will have a point. But the shift is more a reminder that governing Canada requires compromise. It’s something the political sphere has been lacking for a couple of decades.
The ideologically oriented governments of Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau tended to insist on doing things their way. They got away with it because the political class learned that elections could be won by efficiently mining thin veins of support, rather than trying to win in as many places as possible. The unintended consequence was polarization.

Ford didn’t have a “mandate” to announce his US booze ban, so why is he saying the election is to give him one? His translucent excuse offers us a way to look back on his six years of doing dubious things without a “mandate”. My @thestar.com column.

Shawn Micallef: Doug Ford hasn’t needed a mandate to make major changes in Toronto. So why does he need one for Donald Trump?
By framing his election call in terms of needing a mandate, Premier Doug Ford invites us to look back on all that he’s done to the city without such a mandate.
