As a higher ed finance person, I keep emphasizing that more students are enrolling in high cost of educating fields like health and engineering and fewer in lower-cost fields like the humanities. This squeezes institutional budgets as cross-subsidies disappear.

Major kudos to MIT, who just put out a report about AI on their campus that lucidly explains the threat posed by AI to cognition and the student experience, while at the same time prioritizes learning, students, and the value of education. 1/x aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/

Thankfully Turnitin's planned change in terms to use all student content for AI development has been forced back. But the big Q remaining is: How did getting a degree from universities worldwide become conditional on students agreeing to the end user licence agreement of an *edtech company*?

Both totally unnecessary and extremely funny that the Guardian has an interactive graphic for you to change the color of the US flag's blue to the color of the Reflecting Pool from 8 to 19 June and counting
Screenshot of the article's graphic, showing color swatches derived from the Earthcam archive, illustration the color of the reflecting pool calibrated against satellite imagery, from 8 June to 19 June 2026. I chose yesterday, 19 June, so it rendered the US American flag with a green hue instead of blue.

Harvard’s new cap on ‘A’ grades is doomed to fail
We know now from decades of research that grades are not scientific or objective measurements of student learning.

Headline of the NYT picture that reads “Elon Musk’s Legacy Is Disease, Starvation and Death” May 30, 2025. The black and white picture is of a soulless Elon Musk standing in a hall wearing a black blazer over a black T-shirt with white letters. No discernible words are visible.

In chemistry, a supersaturated solution is one where you've kept adding a solute to a liquid beyond where the liquid can dissolve everything. All it takes is a nucleation site / seed crystal for the solution to rapidly (sometimes violently) crystalize. Unrelatedly, the US has more guns than people.

Grade inflation can be real and be worth responding to … but not like this! This would be demoralizing for faculty who truly care about teaching, refine pedagogies to help students’ learning, and thoughtfully design meaningful assessments! And this penalizes students who deserve the grade!

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

British Columbia has had a tax on non-primary residences (and the extra taxes on foreign property purchases) for a while, and it hasn’t made the ultra wealthy any less wealthy. Plus studies show it has created more longer term rentals in the market in many areas.

The Dow was at 43,488 when Trump took office. It just hit 50,000. So if you had invested $43,488 in the US, you would now have $50,000. But if you had invested the same amount in the rest of the world, you would now be worth $60,000. Lemme do a expla-youtube-nation www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYL5...

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
