Because abusers are so unwilling to end their control, the most deadly part of an abusive relationship is when victims attempt to leave it. This is another reason you don’t try to force victims to “just leave.” Only they can know when that is a truly viable option.

The essence of an abusive relationship is entrapment. The abuser’s coercive control (in tandem with structural oppression) makes it so their victim *cannot* leave. This is why you DON’T shame victims for “staying,” you give them access to as many resources as you can. To effect the power imbalance.

Also the victims don't need telling to leave, they need material support in doing so. Easy access to safe housing would help address abuse in a major way.
