I am, at this point, entirely committed to my bit about bringing up Leigh Brackett at any opportunity, but she really was as good as the best. As Bryn says, she could write sharp pulp adventure, but also poetic elegy and – when she wanted to – frankly and bleakly. And weave those things together.

A bit further on Leigh Brackett: I always found The Martian Chronicles haunting- poignant- melancholy- fascinating. Brackett has that ancient melancholy on Mars, writes as ravishingly as Ray Bradbury her friend (when she gives herself time), yet with pulp adventure and extravagant fantasy too.

Furious Makes Black Women's Bitterness A Badge Of Honor
In Hulu's Furious, the "bitter Black woman" is a sign of virtue rather than shame. Nora Washington isn't likable, but she's devastatingly human.

Book 5: The Sea Kings of Mars & Other Stories by Leigh Brackett Keeping with the planetary adventure theme, there isn’t much better than “The Queen of Space Opera’s” fantastic and evocative imaginings of Mars and Venus Equal to Robert E. Howard, Moorcock and E R Burroughs for pulp excellence 🪐📚💙

Leigh Brackett’s Martian tales are intoxicating, a heady wine of poetic language and epic hints of great past civilizations, the prose has a timeless feeling. The word craft of a Bradbury tale and the action and wonder of a Burroughs tale. Brackett is every inch their equal

Read the whole of Perumal Murugan's short novel Story of a Black Goat last night (I was after goat stories)--didn't intend to but hard to stop. Read his One Part Woman years ago. Terrible things happen in the goat book, truly wonderful too--more or less as I remember of the other. Beautiful writer.

Latest read, The Matter of Seggri (1994) by Ursula K. Le Guin; in this sf novella of (roughly) Renaissance era gender-reversal, males are rarely born, and therefore protected, pampered (& ignorant) studs, while the women are the productive, educated, sexually free members of society. Great. #BookSky

Actually I'm going to say, while it might upset some writing in the genre (specifically men who write women for insta-vulnerable, as if that isn't mega sexist): More horror protagonists should be men who spend a lot of the story screaming and crying and terrified. Let them be vulnerable characters.

Two paperback copies of Double-Edge Sword & Sorcery stacked at an offset so you can see a bit of each cover.
