I have a new working paper examining how academic schools within universities allocate resources. Using data from HelioCampus, I find that schools cut staff positions first during difficult times and that there are huge variations in delivery costs across universities.

It’s hard not to see Vance’s criticism of the Pope’s theological bona fides as just silly hubris. But I also see it as a stress test of sorts — can they manipulate sentiment against a pontiff. Not for Trump’s interests. More likely for Thiel’s.

The Kentucky Senate passed a bill that would allow colleges to lay off tenured faculty with 30 days of notice if program enrollments are determined to be low, going well beyond the norm of discontinuing the program in order to do layoffs.

The estimated costs of running a college increased by 3.6% in FY 2025, above both the general rate of inflation and increases in net tuition revenue. Employee salaries went up by about 4%, a result of compensating for past inflation but something we won't see again for years.
