5th of Owltober! Long-Eared Owlet "Ginette" had surgery for a broken wing, with metal pins placed to stabilise the fracture. Clinic Erminea in Switzerland reported she was doing well. Link to donate to Erminea: erminea.org/index.php?na... Source: fb.com/299762959379... #owlsintowels #owltober💛🦉
Arranged in a nest shape is a dusty-burnt-orange towel (in colour only; the cloth is untarnished by earth or flame). Within that nest is a Long-Eared Owl chick draped in a juvenile coat entirely made of ashy-white feathers, with the exception of a bat-shaped mask of brownish-black around her eyes. On the topic of eyes, they're bright orange, like buoyancy rings, around pupils as wide as saucers. An x-ray output (post-surgery) shows a long thin metal rod stabilising the bébé owl's humerus. The metalwork is bright white compared to the rest of the owl's skeleton, glowing pale green on a dark background. The owl's bone structure is surprisingly small, illustrating that owls are 99% fluff. A few dozen feathers are radiodense, likely due to having blood supply as they grow, and so the spines appear bright and rather like fish bones or wide-tooth combs. A cone mask for the anaesthesia is placed around the owl's head. The text "Gauche" appears below the pinned wing which might seem odd commentary from the radiographers, had one not just learned the French word for "Left". Back in the visible spectrum, the Long-Eared Owlet rests on red and orange towels inside a dark-walled container, peering up at whomever is peering down. A pink gauze wrap with purple splotches is around her now pinned Guache wing. She appears startled, and her buoyancy-ring eyes look more lemon than orange in this light.

4th of Owltober! Coda the Eastern Screech Owl, an ambassador at BeWild Reptile Rescue in North Carolina, is pictured shortly before getting his beak trimmed with the help of summer interns. Want to donate to BeWild? bewildnc.org/support-us/ Source: fb.com/752793290801... #owlsintowels #owltober 💛🦉
Coda the Owl is wrapped in a plain white hand towel. Owing (mostly) to the wrap, he is oval shaped and nearly a borb (where borb = bird orb). He's much like the Owls in Towels logo but with desaturated plumage and cat-like ear tufts. His feather are the "gray-morph" variant of Eastern Screech Owls, peppered and bridled with black texturing that looks like granite rocks or tree bark. He has short ashy-white rictal bristles and longer black "whisker" feathers about his long and thin pale beak that hooks over the towel edge. A handler has him in their palms the way one might hold a new-born. He has anime-eyes: a pair of slate-grey peepers looking up at the humans with an expression of innocence and trust.

3rd of Owltober! An Australian Boobook at South Oakleigh Wildlife Shelter fell victim to an attack from a mob of Magpies. A reminder to take care around nesting Magpies this season, be you feathered or not! Want to donate to SOWS? sows.org.au/donate via: fb.com/833886482101... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Boobook looks positively terrified... mortified... petrified... stupefied. Which is fair dinkum for any Magpie victim, but then again, it may just be RBF (Resting Boobook Face). Regardless, this owl has a shocked expression and mismatched pupils, with a pair of wide eyes the hue of a dark forest floor, or a kiwifruit that's gone a bit soft past its prime. She's wrapped in a blue tea towel which, along with her brown plumage, collects wayward strands of grass and leaf litter. Her feathers are the same tone as Chewbacca's fur, though not quite as long. In a word: Boobookiee.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Everyone is so tired. Exhausted. And I'm talking to so many friends and colleagues who are hoping for a functional institutional power to come along and take care of them, take the annoying work and worry away. An employer, a publisher, a big funder, an elected leader, etc. I think it's just us.

It's not just the awful ads. It's not just the grave threat of a tyrant who can spend w/e he wants from the treasury. It's knowing that they stole the money from already dedicated funds and based on past precedent it'll likely be a fund meant to feed impoverished children or something akin to that.

Okay so the "The Marines were not seriously injured but they got traumatic brain injuries (TBI)" line where is this coming from? What is the threshold being used for "seriously injured" by media reporting on this and why have they concluded the Marines TBIs from the missile attack don't meet it?

Four images left to right of Rachel Weisz filming The Mummy 4. She's wearing a honey yellow skirt with black polka dots that drops just beneath the knee. A leather brown shirt with short sleeves and matching color belt. A bolero in a dark wood brown with patches of leather brown on the cuffs in matching color as her shirt and belt. A wide brimmed hat the same dark wood brown as her bolero with a golden hatband tied around and bowed in front. She's wearing the hat tilted with part of the brim angled down towards her right shoulder. She has on elbow length gloves, all black save for a band near the elbow of the same leather brown as her shirt and belt. She's carrying a brown handbag that looks big enough to fit a phone book. She appears to be in the same location in all four images. The first she's standing in front of black iron-wrought fencing and gray stone buildings and looking towards camera with an undefinable expression. In the second she's walking towards camera with a handheld device up to her ear her look vacant as if her attention is elsewhere like she's listening to something. In both the first and second frame there is another person in the background, in the first they look like a background actor and in the second a crew member. In the third she's on a smooth looking cobblestone walk with a set of stairs in the back. She's looking off frame left and whatever the device is she's now carrying it low in her right. Final image is left side profile and she's holding the handheld back up to her ear while looking off to her left towards frame with an amazing side-eye. One of the cameras used for filming is right behind her in this image.

I've always lamented the lack of required education in art history (or visual studies, if you like), in public secondary education. Without this requires grounding, many people see images as nothing more than Rorschach Tests, & so images like this one get to protest plausible deniability.
