I've used Ollama/Mistral to do some OCR and that's about it. Not at my PC to check but iirc I've got an i7-14700KF and an RTX 4070 Ti. Ideally, I'd like to keep everything local

Never been a software engineer proper (only an amateur tinkerer). But I've got the competence to learn. Working in a university library, as an assistant, is the dream—although I would genuinely suffer *any* job, even retail, if I knew this hypothetical system would up the odds of an interview.

I just think that if it's now common practice for employers to screen CVs with AI, before it reaches a pair of human eyeballs, then fuck it, I might as well try to respond in kind and see what happens.

CV fluffing/adjusting it to job criteria, assessing how good a match I am, that sort of thing. CV writing has always been a black box to me, either because I'm shite at selling myself or I don't hit the right keywords. Or both.

Been thinking about building one of these workflows you've been posting about, got any links on where to start? Not done a lot of coding in a while but this job market's hellish all over

It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.

Reading The Last Continent now (had to skip Interesting Times) and I thought the whole Wizards series was doomed to bore. Glad I've seen myself wrong. If I'd read it sooner it definitely would've influenced my thesis LMAO #Discworld

There is much emphasis on how to declare and justify the use of genAI but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of codifying what these technologies are/aren't besides 1.1/calling them "tools."

st-andrews.ac.uk/policy/acade... I was told by one of my tutors back in April that St. Andrews would put out a policy on using genAI in teaching, and here it is. *On first skim* there is nothing that tips me off, but I'm sure others will find some bits worth questioning.

"Florence Craye ran her Powered by the Apocalypse homebrew the other night, Jeeves. Have you played PbtA, Jeeves?"

"I have not yet had the pleasure, sir."

"Nor have I, Jeeves. Not a twenty-sider to be had. One would think dice technology hadn't advanced since the days of Parker Brothers." I took a harrowed sip of my energy drink. "I tried to roll initiative and was called an 'incurable gamist.'"

"Most distressing, sir."

"Give Bertram Wooster dungeons, Jeeves. Give him dragons. Give him dice by the handful. I'm a simple man, Jeeves."

"Yes, sir."

I'm reading a book on collaborative worldbuilding—judging from my own experiences, any time I've ever asked folks on the web to work on something together, I seldom get a response. It's an ideal I agree with, of course, but I find the collective action problem to be a persistent hurdle.

bm @brologue.net · 25/08/2026
I'm scouting for people who would be interested in a collaborative #worldbuilding project with me, if such an opportunity was available. The premise? Let's say: A #Discworld adjacent satirical fantasy world that strives to pick up where Pratchett left off.

The plot meanders, spirals and inevitably explodes in a neurotic crashout before concluding that all of the UK, ALL OF IT, is an eldritch system of status games, based on belief, petty and crabbuckety all the way down. But cheer up: Bake Off's on in five. 2/2

Belief (in general); they start it by trying to reinvent Philomena Cunk from first principles. When that doesn't work, they attempt an Adam Curtis pastiche which collapses in on itself. 1/2

Where AI *does* produce value, that value is comparable to a *plug-in*, a new feature for your word processor or image/sound/video-editing package that might help you do your job somewhat better, or it might not. 7/

I do think more of us should keep plugging away at this "AI is plugins" line because anyone who uses a software long enough can remember the first time an update added a benign, optional feature that they personally didn't have much use for. It's a hype-resistant comparison.

Maybe it seems weird that AI bosses won't stop rending their garments about the terrible potential of their bots, from the jobspocalypse that'll ensue when AI does our jobs, to the impending moment when the word-guessing programs learn too many words, wake up and turn us into paperclips. 1/

One of the reasons I work hard not to take myself too seriously is because taking yourself too seriously as an artist is how you start spinning your wheels overthinking "how people perceive you" and not "the art you are making." Impostor syndrome is a symptom of arrogance of the Woody Allen type

one of the most lowkey infuriating ways ai has ruined web search is the gazillion ai-generated wikis that crop up whenever a new game comes out and there hasn't been a lot of time to discover things yet. when mewgenics came out i remember stumbling on a "wiki" with HORRENDOUS slop pixel art lmao
many big walk "wikis," one of which is ranked higher on DDG than the real Wikipedia entry
