one of the most lowkey infuriating ways ai has ruined web search is the gazillion ai-generated wikis that crop up whenever a new game comes out and there hasn't been a lot of time to discover things yet. when mewgenics came out i remember stumbling on a "wiki" with HORRENDOUS slop pixel art lmao
many big walk "wikis," one of which is ranked higher on DDG than the real Wikipedia entry

And once you've done that, writes Le Guin, it is up to *you* to draw the maps and build the cities you will be reporting on. At the absolute worst, an expert in the field will either miss your email or redirect you to some of their recent work. So email them.
See, the thing is, as a writer you are free. You are about the freest person that ever was. Your freedom is what you have brought with your solitude, your loneliness. You are in the country where *you* make up the rules, the laws. You are both dictator and obedient populace. It is a country nobody has ever explored before. It is up to you to make the maps, to build the cities. Nobody else in the world can do it, or ever could do it, or ever will be able to do it again. And all of this, every time, you do alone—absolutely alone. The only questions that really matter are the ones you ask yourself.

Something I do think this essay could've expanded upon is the need for us to get out ahead of the argument that all LLMs do is recognise patterns and remix past data, and that is also what humans also do—ergo shut up, accept AI is here to stay, now lie in the road while it steamrolls you, luddite.

I also love that moment in F for Fake... but about fifteen minutes earlier than that, there's a spine-tingling example of art that was clearly designed to have effects on its audience. That was pretty magical, too. youtube.com/watch?v=yB6G...
I have a friend who does stage magic, and they occasionally show me tricks, and I got to show them Orson Welles’ F for Fake, one of the best movies ever made, a movie everyone falls in love with once they’ve seen it. It’s great. There’s a particular moment about an hour and twenty minutes into the film or so, where Orson explains something to the audience that always gets an amazing laugh.

The movie is about showmanship.

Who’s the showmanship for? The audience. It serves both an aesthetic and a practical experience; by designing the show itself to excite and delight the audience, and then through the showmanship of the magician — in this case, Orson Welles — we can make a magic show that is far more compelling than someone standing outside, say, a Wal-Mart walking up and going “hey, can I show you a magic trick?” and then doing a basic card trick.

The more panache, the more flourish, the more showmanship, the more delightful the magic trick, and the more likely the audience is going to go “what an amazing show.”

Your draft will look and feel a bit like this (1). But it will objectively be more of a story than... this (2). 73/
Ptolemy's world map, circa 150 AD (15th c. recreation)My biggest map is a city with a heavy steel industry mixed with slave breeding and trading. There's so many stories and so many levels of political and economic activity. Is the steel industry propped up by slave labor or not? What do the slaves do for the city? In the city of [EXPUNGED] slaves do lots of the low skilled labor, but are treated well by there [sic] masters since the slave species and master species are evolved to exist in their roles given the technology of the master's species over the slave species. The story of this map covers thousands of pages of material, I can't really make direct quotes for things. I'd have to word-search a hundred documents to bring up direct sources for [REDACTED] lore.

That is to say, when someone asks a very specific question, then that question is all I know of their world. Their world, for all intents and purposes, is a black box. These questions are literally not for me. 63/
a list of recent questions posted to the Worldbuilding Stack Exchange:

1. Mechanism for hallucinogens causing multicolored irises
2. How would a r-strategy species control their population?
3. What order of magnitude incoming asteroid could we, in fact, deflect?
4. How could the Avignon papacy replace Rome as the center of power?
5. A Modern Knight
6. What limitations would a sky siphonophore face?
7. How can I rationalize that the first sapient artificial superintelligence is created by an individual rather than a company like OpenAI?
