8/ Speculatively, the manifestation of stuttering symptoms in speech may result from the fine-grained temporal structuring required for phoneme selection, sequencing and articulation. 🧠

7/ These findings point to a general difference in the temporal structuring of action selection and preparation in stuttering, beyond speech.

6/ Strikingly, lateralised mu/beta modulation was weaker in PWS than TFS. This difference coincided with the time of between-action shifts, a period of high uncertainty regarding which action to select and when. 📉

5/ Both groups used retro-cues and temporal expectations to prepare and shift between hand actions, as reflected in task performance and related modulations in lateralised sensorimotor mu/beta activity. ⏱️

4/ We used lateralised sensorimotor mu/beta-frequency (8–30 Hz) activity as a proxy of the relative prioritisation of one hand action among competing options. 🧠

3/ To explore this, we recorded MEG from 20 people who stutter (PWS) and 20 typically fluent speakers (TFS) during a visuomotor working-memory task requiring temporally structured selection, preparation, and shifts between left- and right-hand actions. ✋
