Garden wildlife. A lovely Zoropsis spinimana on the shed last night. Possibly my favourite spider, and one I've seen fairly regularly here over the last few years. And a second one was inside the shed too - only underside views of that one, but they're quite distinctive! @britishspiders.bsky.social

I for instar #Arachtober as I don't have any 'I' spiders (maybe @tylanberry.bsky.social @chalkspring.bsky.social etc?) Instar is any stage in the development between moults. The instar immediately before maturity is described as being subadult. Some spiders have a set amount, others are variable.

@britishspiders.bsky.social I've been trying to get a video of this all week... she's on the outside of my conservatory door, but the video is from the inside where I can see her tucked away by her large Orb web. I love the feather decoration 😍

This was a challenge @britishspiders.bsky.social 3 days running, this spider put a main thread on my garden swing cover, which I tried to move... disaster. So I put up a couple of my own string lines and YAY, she used that to secure her web, so now we can both happily sit on the swing again 😍

I was really excited to see some adult Trochosa from the Sphagnum depths of Morden Bog recently - a historic site for the mythical T. spinipalpis. Annoyingly, and unsurprisingly to be honest, all of them were T. terricola, as seems to always be the case from western bogs @britishspiders.bsky.social

Four Araneus species from Lakenheath Fen today. They had very recently mowed the paths and there weren't many spiders to be seen, and NO pyramidatus anywhere, which is usually the spider I see the most. Tetragnatha and Metellina also seen.

It is sitting head down on a piece of pale grey concrete. Two of these were found under bits of concrete rubble found at the edge of a roadside woodland.Chernes cimicoides: a dark, reddish-brown pseudoscorpion with large robust claws on a piece of wood. It has a matt/granular appearance. Its body and pedipalps are covered in short, blunt hairs (called setae). It's a good time of year to be looking out for the distinctively-shaped Trashline Spider Cyclosa conica. It often embellishes its closely-woven orb web with a line (stabilimentum) of food remains or other debris ('trash'). Widespread, usually in shaded shrubs and trees, across Britain.
