My seven year old granddaughter found this in the air vent of their imported Toyota. Educated guess but think it’s Protaetia orientalis, the Oriental Flower Beetle. Not one I was expecting in North-east Derbyshire. #Cetoniinae #Coleoptera #Scarabaeidae

Field Pansy, Viola arvensis, making a welcome appearance in my garden after a bit of soil disturbance. I reckon people would travel for miles to see this plant if it was rare. Luckily it’s not. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Chicken of the Woods, Laetiporus sulphureus, unusually growing out of the ground, no sign of where a tree used to be but presuming rotting roots just under the surface. #Fungi

I do an annual survey of several Reens and Ditches in South Wales, a small job I’ve kept on since retirement. Both Dytiscus dimidiatus and Hydaticus transversalis had been missing for several years until this year when they made an appearance once more. #Coleoptera #Dytiscidae

Hydaticus transversalis from a rather polluted ditch just outside of Cardiff. Strangely several species of scarce water beetles found over last three days but not a single Agabinae or even the ubiquitous Hydroporus palustris. Hot summers, strange times. #Coleoptera #Dytiscidae

No plants in the garden I’ve moved into. Therefore dig a bed and get some in. They don’t have to be native to UK but do have to have insect appeal. Four days from planting and here’s a couple of early results. #Lepidoptera #Syrphidae
