On Jan. 1, 1870, public executions in Canada were banned. The last public execution in Canadian history was on Dec. 7, 1869 when Nicholas Melady was put to death at the Huron District Gaol in Goderich, Ontario for the murder of his father and stepmother.

Those are just ones from this morning. It's time that @cityofwinnipeg.bsky.social started treating cycling as legitimate transportation. When city workers are right next to a lane obstruction or thousands pass by, there is no reason that it isn't reported and fixed. #winnipeg

Last example. Westminster right at Broadway. That big chunk of concrete has been in the bike lane for close to 2 months. This one in particular is a repeat offender. It seems that trucks or cars will hit it quite regularly. (this is also the corner where 2 cyclists were hit earlier this year).
A bike lane, with a concrete jersey barrier dislodged into it. The road is blocked off beside the bike lane with City of Winnipeg road barriers for road construction. In the background is Broadway Ave.

Westminster near Broadway. Been there for at least 2 months, likely longer. Notice how the road is closed in the background. The City has been doing road work in this area off & on all summer...yet, no one bothered to clear the bike lane.

These two dislodged jersey barriers are on Granite in front of the curling club. This is one of the busiest bike lanes in the city. These have been a hazard since at least May.
2 concrete barriers that have been bumped into the bike lane. In the background is a cyclist coming towards the camera (happy birthday Ian!). There is also a car passing in the street.

This one is in front of the Police HQ on Graham Ave. I first noticed it the beginning of July. Since then, hundreds of @cityofwinnipeg.bsky.social employees go by it every single day. And yet, here we are 3 months later, still blocking the bike lane.
A concrete barrier that has been bumped into a 2-way bike lane. This is in front of the Police Headquarters. The street is partially closed to busses only on one side and a bike lane on the other.

This year is another matter. The checking every two weeks has not happened, & I just haven't had the energy to keep reporting all the bike lanes that need fixing. It's amazing that a lump of concrete can be dislodged into the middle of the bike lane & the city will never put it back. Some examples:

Last summer I was calling/emailing @cityofwinnipeg.bsky.social all the time about bike lanes. Cars & trucks kept hitting jersey barriers, dislodging them into the bike lanes. After much to and fro, Roads said they would check the lanes every 2 weeks. That worked great... last year.

MEANWHILE, in Canada, meet Brady Rogers, the reluctant politician who's fed up and thinks he can do better. His sign says "I barely want to do this." His website says, "I guess I'm running for Kelowna city council." His business? Recycling plastic into cool things.
lawn sign with a grumpy man in a "DADLIFE" sweatshirt and the sign says "I barely want to do this" with his name and campaignHi, I’m Brady.
Do I enjoy politics? No.

Do I know what I’m doing? No.

But am I qualified? Also no.

I was born in Williams Lake and raised in Kelowna since I was 10. These are the streets I biked every day, the cars I threw crab apples at (sorry), and the parks I played in. Seeing this city grow has been cool, but with growth has come a whole new spectrum of challenges. Running for council is the last thing I saw myself doing this year. I don’t like meetings, I don’t like having to be certain places at certain times, and I’m allergic to stuffy offices. But unfortunately, I happen to like Kelowna, and think I can help do some good.I guess I’m running for Kelowna city council.
Support the campaignI graduated from UBCO in 2015ish (long story) and worked for 4 years as a robotic automation engineer. As cool as the job was, it was soulless, and I wanted to use my abilities for more than just helping huge companies save money.

Since 2019, I’ve been building The Rogerie.
Starting as a farmers market booth beside the mall, my wife and I began turning plastic waste into new products in our laundry room. Seven painful years later, and we have a pretty awesome shop downtown by Sprout (come check it out!) where you’ll find me just about every day.
