Just to build on this, I don’t think we are hurdling towards a crisis in the near term, the US has a decade (if not *much* more) fiscal space available to it, but I also don’t think that $77/2wks is a particularly high price for people to pay to future-proof the USD’s exorbitant privilege

No, when the average person uses the term they mean someone worth a billion dollars, full stop. (PS you left Rockefeller out in your first post by claiming this happened within the last hundred years.)

Complaining about "billionaires" but refusing to adjust for inflation when talking about the historical rich is just absolutely infuriating.

My personal get-everyone-mad take is we need to raise taxes on everyone making over 75k for individuals, 150k for households. This is probably impossible.

Good to see. More political leaders—including at the state level—need to vow accountability for the current lawlessness.

It's all gender. The Dems truly are the Mom Party and GOP the Dad Party. "Dad got drunk and burned the vinyl siding off the house because he tried to run the barbecue too close." Not, 'Why did he do that?" but "Why didn't mom stop him when I didnt call her at work?"

Israel is not an "ethnostate'. it's a parliamentary with 2,000,000 Arab citizens with full equal rights. They serve on Knesset (its Congress) and the courts. FFS Jew-haters are dumb AF.

The White House says the Kennedy Center board vote was “unanimous”… BULLSHIT. @repbeatty.bsky.social, a Congressional member of the board, was on the call. They muted her and didn't let her voice opposition. This is beyond absurd, totally illegal, and a disgrace to the memory and legacy of JFK.

One thing that the Epstein files have shown is that people do not understand how monsters like this work. Brooks sucks but this is quite likely true! People like Epstein collect powerful people in their orbit so that they are protected, not to get everyone around them hooked on being a pedo.

I was a kid once. And my biggest regret in life is that I never got a childhood without pain. Politicians should never insert themselves into the personal health care decisions of patients, parents, and their providers—and that includes trans Americans.

Stephen Miller to Vanity Fair photographer: “You know, you have a lot of power in the discretion you use to be kind to people.” Photographer to Miller: “You know, you do, too.” www.washingtonpost.com/style/power/... @shaneisland.bsky.social
Were there moments that you missed? Anything that happened that’s on the cutting room floor?

I don’t think there’s anything I missed that I wish I’d gotten. I’ll give you a little anecdote: Stephen Miller was perhaps the most concerned about the portrait session. He asked me, “Should I smile or not smile?” and I said, “How would you want to be portrayed?” We agreed that we would do a bit of both. And then when we were finished, he comes up to me to shake my hand and say goodbye. And he says to me, “You know, you have a lot of power in the discretion you use to be kind to people.” And I looked at him and I said, “You know, you do, too.”

Two jobs ago, after I’d been there three years, my manager told me if they’d known I wasn’t gay when hiring me they would have gone with their second choice because he was black. It was an INSANE thing to hear. Mostly this stuff is bullshit but it does happen.

Correct.
Suebsaeng: Susie Wiles is someone who’s been known in various elite Republican circles for a long time as someone who, while she is a committed conservative, she is not an ideological true believer in the same way that a Stephen Miller is or someone like that. Like, she is very, very, very attuned to and comfortable with Trumpism. But if Marco Rubio or Jeb Bush had won in the primary in 2015 or 2016, she’d be comfortable in that set as well.

I do not say what I am about to say lightly at all. **People like Susie Wiles are a terrific example of how something as bad as Nazism actually happened.** When it comes to the old guard or the establishment of any political order in any country that is experiencing an authoritarian wave, **there are not enough Stephen Millers in it or in any political party’s mainstream to carry the project the whole way.**

When Epstein died, I was 100% certain it was suicide. Because jail sucks and it's not an uncommon thing for detainees to do. But the way the Trump administration has behaved pretty much every time anything Epstein-related has happened, even I'm starting to be like "...but *was* it suicide?? 🤔"

"I'll follow a lawful order" is kind of the correct answer when asked if you will do something the president orders you to do, its just a bit scary in this situation cause we all worry the people in power now wouldn't recognize an illegal order if it shot them in the face.

I heard someone say this and I think it makes sense: when Paul was younger and better his attitude could fly. Now that he’s fallen off and he’s telling people who are his level or better what to do (when he can’t execute either), it’s incredibly toxic and if he can’t take the note he’s a problem.
