Serious question: Is there a name for when a passage (here a recipe) is copied wrongly from the original text, continues mutating then finds itself added to a new compilation alongside the original passage? What do you call such a redundant mutated extra? If there isn't a name I need to invent one.

The top of the title page from my proposal, with the title in large font, "Lawplay: Early Medieval Law & Tabletop Roleplay Games"

Followed by an inset paragraph of framing text, setting the scene:

Dice clatter across the table. Character sheets spread amidst rulebooks, and a well-thumbed copy of an early medieval law-code. Amongst friends, a tale has unfurled of heinous crimes followed by bloody vengeance and feud. Crowds gather for the law-case underway, all eyes on the accused who has failed to gather oathhelpers to support his plea. A cauldron is set to broiling on the fire, a ring glinting in its depths. The ordeal by hot water awaits, tension rising for this lawplay.

Do you study medieval manors? Do you want to speak at @imc-leeds.bsky.social? Then we have the Call for Papers for you! Medieval Manorial Research: Community in the Manor. We welcome researchers of all disciplines and career stages. Deadline 4th September 2026. #IMC2027 #Skystorians #Medievalsky
Call for papers poster for IMC 2027.

From juries to tithing-groups, from haywards to cowherds, from the lord’s steward to the harvest workers in the field: the institution of the manor played a key role in shaping rural medieval communities. Research into such populations has traditionally looked to court rolls, accounts and surveys to understand how ordinary people lived their lives. Yet, the scale and complexity of manorial documentation preserved in modern archives presents a significant challenge and much remains critically under-studied. At the same time, other methodologies incorporating archaeological, landscape, and material culture evidence have much to contribute to our understanding of medieval manorial communities, although multi-disciplinary approaches remain under-explored.

We would like to invite papers from researchers who work with manorial documents, either as a means of understanding medieval life and community, or as archival objects in their own right. We also welcome papers focused on non-documentary source bases, comparative studies combining material and documentary evidence, or studies comparing manorial communities across a broad chronological and geographical range. If you research the medieval manor, we would like to hear from you!

Approaches to communities may include (but are not limited to):
Daily peasant life
Manor courts, custom, customary law
Lordship and seigneurial agency in the manor
Communities in the landscape
Manorial material culture
The use and materiality of manorial documents in the archive

Please send a title and abstract of no more than 250 words, and a short biography including name, institutional affiliation, and email address to jenni.lane@york.ac.uk and samuel.riding@history.ox.ac.uk. The deadline for proposals is Friday 4th September 2026.
We welcome proposals from researchers in any discipline and at all career stages. Please indicate in your submission whether you intend to present virtually or in-person.

Hi @karanthir.bsky.social - I think I've just come up with my clearest description yet of what I mean by "Lawplay" in practice 🤣 #LangobardRPG 🎲
On Lawplay. When circumstances present the referee an opportunity to ‘trick’ their players (well, their players’ characters) into committing a crime under early medieval law, I of course whole-heartedly recommend it as a means for enriching the plot and entertainment and as a vehicle for the introduction and/or dissemination of relevant historical information to the troupe! At the same time, players usually do not need to be tricked, and—bless the little murder-hobos—will after all commit every crime you can imagine and then some. gleefully.

The Middle Ages in Modern Games @midagesmodgames.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
The CfP for the upcoming #MAMG26 is now live! The event will take place on 5-7 Oct, assynchronously and online. Come join us from anywhere in the world to discuss medievalisms in games and alternative approaches to the ludic past.
In a time of growing political and environmental anxieties, the Middle Ages are often sought as a source of inspiration for alternative futures. Ecologically-minded games like Of Life and Land look to the medieval past to explore alternative, non-exploitative engagements with nature. Medievalist RPGs have long served as possibility spaces for players to interrogate and experiment with notions of sexuality, gender, and identity more broadly. Games like Scriptorium and Traveller’s Rest imagine medieval pasts divorced from the logics of violence often associated with the period. Medievalist fantasy games like Metaphor: ReFantazio openly engage with utopian thinking and our capacities to imagine possible worlds.

We invite analytical ‘papers’ (comprising 400-500 words of text or 5-minute videos) and sessions of 3 to 5 papers which address any aspects of the medieval period or medievalism in any and all forms of modern games. We particularly welcome papers addressing the central conference themes of ‘Possible Worlds’ and ‘Possible Pasts’. The conference will be conducted remotely and there will be no registration fee. To promote accessibility and inclusivity, the event runs asynchronously across time zones.

We encourage submissions from medievalists, games scholars and developers at any point in their career— especially those from Postgraduate Students, Early Career Researchers and members of any groups under-represented within the academy and industry. We welcome pieces addressing any region globally, and within a broad definition of ‘medieval’ and ‘medievalism’.

We are able to accept papers in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Please send abstracts of no more than 200 words, brief biographies, and indications of time zone and availability as attachments in Word to midagesmodgames@gmail.com by Sunday 3 August.

Hawking and Lawplay
Motivation
To be able to hunt with a raptor, you must first have one. While there are numerous permitted means of acquiring a hunting bird in the early middle ages, there are likewise many illicit ways. And these means can surely result in accusations and the pursuit of justice through the emnity of the faida [feud] and recourse to the law. For this one to two session scenario, each player character should be suitably motivated towards the acquisition and ownership of a raptor—typically a goshawk, else a sparrowhawk or peregrine falcon—whether they want it to hunt with themselves (for prestige or to fill the cooking pot), to gift it to another in the hopes of gaining favour, or else to maliciously prevent another from owning it and deprive them of the benefits it would have bestowed!

Scenario
The scenario should typically be split into two main parts, with the referee making at least one or two significant opportunities throughout, in which the player characters get to fly their birds.

The first part focuses on the .I. Acquisition of raptors by the player characters, and growing Suspicison as to who perpetrators likely are when illicit means have been employed. And with the referee (and ruleset) facilitating the onset and escalation of legal troubles, there should hopefully be many grounds for pointing blame and levelling accusations with relevant legal officials. By the end of this section, at least one of the characters (hopefully more, if not all) should be directly embroiled in one or more .II. Causae [law suits]. In the second part of the scenario, then, the player characters develop their role as the accusers, or the accused—depending on the nature of the shenanigans that occured previously. But, if all goes well (from the perspective of the troupe!), the dispute will have erupted between the collected characters, and the players will end up portraying both sides as the events unfurl.

If the acquisition scenario somehow passes witho…
