It’s this, but it’s also so much more that GTAVI. This is a brand strategy Rockstar have been committed to for the last 20 years: that they make “cinematic”, prestige games, but that their games are *more than just games* in the first place. That they can compete with (and win out over) film and TV.

rockstar has boasted that all of GTA VI's NPCs are handmade and that human beings put thought into every random room and location—a breath of fresh air in an AI-obsessed industry. but we can't just ignore its long history of mistreating the humans responsible
Eight years later, Rockstar is on the verge of one-upping itself. But once again, that achievement might come at too high a cost. Despite reports in 2020 that Rockstar had cleaned up its act both in terms of 60-hour work weeks and a pervasive frattiness enabled by leadership, more recent times have suggested that it still doesn’t value its people so much as what it can squeeze out of them. In 2024, the company announced a five-day-per-week return-to-office policy that proved immensely unpopular with employees who’d finally managed to balance work and life under Rockstar’s figurative roof. This was met with large-scale pushback, as well as concerns about workers with disabilities and backsliding on crunch. Rockstar, however, refused to budge—in part as a preemptive countermeasure against leaks on the scale of what happened in 2022. We now know how that story ends.

Then, last year, Rockstar abruptly fired over 30 employees involved in a push to unionize their workplace for allegedly “discussing confidential information in a public forum” when—according to the Independent Workers’ Union Of Great Britain (IWGB)—they were actually communicating in a private union Discord. Protests followed. Fired workers, in conjunction with IWGB, are currently in the process of pursuing legal action against Rockstar, with a final hearing set for next month. UK-based Rockstar workers formally announced their union earlier this year, but Rockstar has yet to officially recognize it. Meanwhile, in July of this year, Game Developer reported that Rockstar has been ignoring pay inequity, mandating crunch, and weaponizing bonuses.

My thesis “Archaeological Game Design: Video Game Archaeology as Interpretive Play and Play Preservation” is now online and open access! You can access the official version here, however this has some figures redacted: qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle...
Archaeological Game Design: Video Game Archaeology as Interpretive Play and Play Preservation

Abstract: Video game archaeology is a relatively new field. This can involve studying players through the traces they leave in digital game worlds, though only limited work of this kind exists. Furthermore, the potential of these methods to record ephemeral play experiences for preservation purposes has not been widely explored. The first part of the thesis establishes the background literature on games archaeology and play preservation. The second part reports on the development of novel archaeological methodologies for preserving play. This includes three case studies; a go-along study in the massively multiplayer online game Wurm Online, an archaeological survey in Elden Ring, and a collaborative autoethnography in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. The third part of this thesis reports on the results of a player study investigating how participants interpret environmental storytelling. We report on a study in which participants (N=202) played a game about exploring a procedurally generated ruined village and were then surveyed on their interpretations. We draw on methods and theory from archaeology, a field that specialises in the interpretation of material remains, to support a grounded theory analysis of the survey responses, from which we form the theory of an archaeological gameworld mental model. Finally, the fourth part of the thesis synthesises these case studies to argue that archaeological game design brings together both the archaeological recording of player traces, as well as player interpretations of a fictional gameworld that should also be preserved. This work contributes both novel methodologies for play preservation and a new theory for how players interpret gameworlds. This work has narrative design applications, and interdisciplinary contributions to game AI, games studies and HCI.
