I don’t trust the mainstream media, but I feel like the primary alternate model, getting the news from the posts of a 14 year-old Romanian schizophrenic shitposter named “G00n3R the Swamp Pervert,” is not necessarily a superior alternative.

Well the government will suffer irreparable harm if they are unable to execute Pike, so you have to let them do it. This isn't a decision on the merits, she could still win on the merits after her execution.

I'd only heard of it until recently. But the line in here about "saying more about the listener than the song" - on one hand that's certainly true about me. On the other hand he wants to treat that as an insult, as if I have some moral obligation to have heard about popular songs.

I’m sure that the developer clamoring for access to Yosemite is promising Trump a kickback of some kind, but to me that’s incidental to the larger point that Trump loves to ruin good things. His orientation is anti-human and anti-civilization and he does whatever he can to hurt people.

One step past "anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism" - "Judaism is Zionism". And the moment the GOP becomes anti-Israel they'll turn this exact chain of reasoning against back against them: "you said it yourself, your 'religion' is just loyalty to another country". (to be clear this is false)

We're in early-2012-gay-marriage territory. The shift in public opinion has already happened, the shift in politician opinion is inevitable. A lot of people are unaware how much their side is losing, and their heads will be spinning within the next 12 months.

It occurs to me that - same way a generic speech about patriotism and selflessness now codes as anti-Trump and partisan - in 2029, the media will discourage discussions about rebuilding our military capacity as being too Trump-focused.

If Republicans aren't going to do anything to regulate AI then it's not up to me whether it becomes a bipartisan issue, and the way to maximize the chances of regulation is to maximize Democratic gains in November.

Usual thing with Ben Gvir is he says out loud the policy Netanyahu tacitly pursues. Best example, when he posted video of prisoners being abused (with himself present). Netanyahu condemned him, but there's no way he didn't know about it already. He's just mad Ben Gvir admitted it publicly.

I wonder if a big part of the turn in public opinion against Israel is simply that thuggish behavior like this has always been happening, and now it just gets written up in Western media more often.

It should be easy to go against Lawler. The cap on the SALT deduction was going to expire, they needed Lawler's vote to extend it, Lawler voted to extend it. He sold out his constituents in an extremely clear-cut and high-profile way!

Also the things that woke 1 was reacting *to* was also worse ... e.g. Harvey Weinstein being a free man in a position of power. The reason for the discussion of the excesses of wokeness is that liberals are willing to acknowledge it, whereas conservatives are still all in on Trumpism.

The alleged motivation for the anti-trans position here is protecting women's sports. But the most likely (and very clearly obviously intended) effect of this stunt is to give the WNBA some legal/PR problems. I'm sure they have the lawyers lined up already to sue the league.

Lay the groundwork now for a future Dem president to cut big checks to blue states as an indemnity for the actions of the Trump administration.

The idea that they're going to give unnecessary medication to soldiers without any doctor's opinion based on vibes is so clearly fucked up. And people who care about soldiers' health, as opposed to proving how tough they are by proxy, should be outraged

Rubio should also realize that if Trump officials accept mass pardons for their crimes, this sort of extradition is an obvious workaround that will 100% be on the table, including for him personally.

Agree with this e.g. for gambling, drugs, certain sex stuff. Also, I think technology is part of the problem. AFAICT this intermediate category historically involved some amount of hypocrisy - people publicly condemning things they did privately. Harder to do when everything's online.

Funny thing here is Goldman wants to go with this canned "why do they criticize Israel and not other countries" rhetoric, even though Mamdani brought up Saudi unprompted in the original clip ... so he briefly acknowledges it but then soldiers on ahead with the original canned rhetoric.

fixed your headline
A hit song on the Billboard 100 charts is termed *$k$-good* if it is _ever_ in a weekly top-$k$, and *$k$-immediate* if it _debuts_ in the top-$k$.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.

*Headline 1.* Olivia Rodrigo is the first $(10,10)$-Olivian woman.

I suspect that if any (male) candidate running in the Republican primary outwardly liked interacting with children as much as Obama, it would be a major liability and attack point for the other candidates and the media.

The way no one even bothers to try to stop Elon Musk anymore - he's allowed to take hundreds of billions of dollars in exchange for empty promises, or incite pogroms and push white nationalism, and no one pushes back or tries to constrain him at all - feels like a society that's simply given up

I saw Peter Beinart speak at my synagogue back in 2012, when THE CRISIS OF ZIONISM was first published, and much of his talk was about the central importance of Israel and Zionism his worldview and the the Jewish people. A lot of why he's evolved the way he has since is that this was the response.

This reminds me of the Fetterman (ugh) "you live in New Jersey" thing against Dr Oz. It's such a minor thing, but they hammered it repeatedly. No tax credits or whatever, just "you live in Jersey".

People will say "oh I'm not say *all* criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic, but ..." so allow me to: Posting this openly implies much worse they're doing off camera. On account of both, we should cut out every favorable treatment we give them until they undergo deradicalization.

IMO a difference between the parties is that Dems will loudly attack this person - fringe candidate and probable right-wing plant - amplifying the idea that Dems have an issue in the process ... whereas Republicans maintain a wall of silence around guys like Randy Fine, who's actually in Congress.

All the super-pro-Israel people pushing this war, 20 years ago were also pushing that Ahmadinejad was an existential threat to Israel and the US and a regime change war to *remove* him was justified. Will any of them comment on this?

IMO the relevance of this is that he represents a lot of what MAGA types *claim* MAGA represents. There's a definite contingent that likes him more than Trump. If I were talking to Rogan I'd say "this is proof, Trump/MAGA don't actually support any of the things you voted for him to do."

Art Vandelay @artsvandelay.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Haven't seen the whole speech but this seems like an appeal to the "MAHA" people ... which is fine but Dems should emphasize that the "MAHA" thing is basically a scam. MAHA is a trademark for ultra-processed snake oil BS, meanwhile the EPA allows toxic fertilizers and forever chemicals in water.

This has a sneering tone as if it's obviously bad, and I kept waiting for some shoe to drop like, the diapers suck or they're paying way too much. But instead this sounds like a fine, sensible, practical program that they can't come up with any real complaints about.

I've always thought a good microcosm for 2024 is that Trump won both the pro-Israel and the pro-Palestinian vote, each side thinking he agreed with them. Obviously this was just Trump massively, shamelessly lying but raises the question of how they got away with it. Below helps explain it!

Think @jamellebouie.net is right, that for mass communication, this all pales in comparison to short-form video. It does seem relevant to journalists who take the conversation on Twitter as reflecting the zeitgeist, and write stories in response - I'm not sure how to fix that exactly.
