We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al
starts doing our knowledge work.

Outsourcing your hobby or pasttime is the ultimate sad person behavior. That's a level of depression I can't comprehend. You can't find joy in any damn thing at that point.

Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets
The ancient two-panel Drake meme. On the top, he's looking away in disgust and holding his hand up. The text next to it says "Truck-or-treat". On the bottom, he looks pleased and is pointing toward text that says "Close your street".

Utah banned SEVEN more books from all public schools yesterday, bringing the total number of state-sanctioned bans in the state to 44. More than half of those bans happened in 2026.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

When iPads came out, I remember hearing that if kids didn't start using iPads in kindergarten they would get left behind. As if it doesn't take 5 minutes tops to figure out how an iPad works.

Meta's statements are always like "we know we've made our products impossibly appealing to teens, but you adults know them best and enforcing limits is a you problem." But also now you're ableist if you do.

Hardly a day goes by without my getting email from someone looking for ways to do good with tech. From computer science students thinking about post-grad careers to seasoned coders with decades of experience, there's an army of hackers looking for a way to turn their expertise into public goods. 1/
The giant head of the Statue of Liberty. Around it are many medieval machines, tended by little medieval rude mechanicals. In the background is a crosshatched architectural drawing of some classical arches and such.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The title for the first two panels reads “dog domestication”.
The first panel shows a wolf running with a pack. The text reads “we changed form, size, personality…”
The second panel shows a chihuahua in a dog bed. The text reads “…lifestyle, instinct, our entire way of being.”
The title for the last two panel reads “cat domestication.”
The third panel shows an image of a cat outside.
The fourth panel shows the exact same cat indoors. The text reads “we went inside.”

We’ve seen this same explosive claim made many times that withers under scrutiny The game is played by making the accusation, having docile media report it, and then the media bury (or not report at all) the eventual resolution

Everybody in the "climate space" (which means everyone on earth...) needs to understand these mind-blowing figures. Google's "total electricity consumption jumped from 31 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2024 to 43 TWh in 2025." In ONE year. The AI corporate arms race is eating the world.

This is nonsensical. Libraries buy huge numbers of books you wouldn't otherwise sell. They're a massive discoverability vector for authors. The reasons behind the declining author earnings are not hard to guess. People read less, have less $ to spend, +media is being consolidated by megacorporations

Hosting an exchange student for a year was delightful for this reason. You never knew what totally banal thing to us would blow their mind. Our Swiss exchange student didn't believe me that when you added water to frozen juice concentrate, you would get juice. He loved it.

The other day I saw one car pass another car - another moving car! Like how you pass someone on the highway! - in a grocery store parking lot directly in front of the store's doors. No one should be driving fast enough to pass or kill someone in a parking lot ffs
