This week you can find The Scale of a Man, my illustrated reflection on craft, grief, and inheritance, on @therumpus.net. Thank you @marinaomi.bsky.social for believing in this piece and getting it further into the world. Read the whole thing here: therumpus.net/2026/10/13/t...
The Scale of a Man, by Lucy Bellwood. In clean, black and blue artwork, a small man in plaid stands between two incoming waves, looking up at a model tall ship in a glass case. Two hands, drawn in clean, black and blue artwork, hold a pen above a penciled page in progress showing a boat and colonists in pencil. The narration says "Okay, Lucy. You can do this."The previous pencilled page is now fully rendered in black and blue. A square rigged sailing ship plunges through the sea in the top panel. It's December, 1732. The merchantman Anne is somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, bound for Yamacraw Bluff. A colonial family look toward the horizon. She carries 114 souls under the leadership of General James Oglethorpe. These English colonists will populate the future state of Georgia. Most survive the crossing, but some do not. The last image of the page shows two small, shrouded bodies plunging below the waves.General Oglethorpe, in wig and greatcoat, writes at a desk on January 13th, 1733. "We have lost none of our people except the youngest son of Richard Cannon, aged eight months, and the youngest son of Robert Clarke, aged one year and an half. Those were so far gone that all our efforts to save them were in vain." In a similar posture, Lucy sits at her drawing table, a hole cut clean through her chest with the light from her anglepoise lamp shooting through it to illuminate a small box of ashes on the table behind her. Narration reads: My dad died while I was working on this comic. I should probably mention that up front. It's impossible to make anything right now that's not full of his absence. In the panel below, the colonists are now in a small rowboat, headed for the distant coast. The colonists' story rolls on, full of the stuff of textbooks. But I can't stop thinking about those two boys.

We are all seeing how just a few months of outsourcing your thinking to AI can wreck your brain. The wealthiest people have outsourced everything to the people around them for YEARS.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

It's so weird that rich people as a class use their wealth to turn the machinery of the state against the common citizen, destroying the public good in order to enrich themselves. Capitalism is probably fine, though.

Bounced *hard* off Crime & Punishment once I realized the protagonist was justifying *murder*. I don't know about Dogstovesky, but in *my* book a crime like that deserves punishment, not platforming! Plus, the streets of St. Petersburg are way too twisted. My city has a sensible grid pattern.

Every college in this country decided that expelling and/or sending the police to beat the shit out of their own students for the crime of being opposed to genocide was their top priority. That and giving Trump complete control of what they teach. Contrast that with how they treat rapists.

I'd never seen this Roy Lichtenstein painting before, but it's incredible how he manages unfailingly to make his copies worse than the original comics he's ripping off.
A drab pop art painting of a sinister man driving a car, watching a stoic blonde in leopard print fur. The proportions of the guy's face are offThe original image, from Girls' Romances 78 by Tony Abruzzo. The guy has a more sinister leer, while the woman has heavier mascara and feels both sadder and more determined. A caption reads "I vowed to myself I would NOT miss my appointment -- that I would NOT go riding with him--yet before I knew it..."

It's a shame Ancient Warfare didn't include photo credits, because that Greek key motif is... interesting. I know key patterns often incorporate swastikas, but it's always a choice on modern re-enactor gear, and this one appears to be *just* interlinked swastikas, which is *definitely* a choice.
Interlinked red swastikas on a Greek tunic, partially onscured by folds of fabric and overlapping armor, but still pretty visible.Another view of the linked swastikas, still slightly obscured but still pretty obvious. Doesn't appear to be any more complex pattern than "swastikas, but they touch at one point."

i call this "neoteny of the oppressed" btw. because children are the archetypal objects of legitimate coercion (violence, authority, control, etc) any vulnerable group can have their autonomy stripped by first linking them to children & childlikeness. the comparison legitimizes any act of coercion

i think in the future all art will be a perfect sphere that we all go look at, one giant orb in the center of america that we all go and stand in front of and point at it and say "there it is, there's the art". nobody knows who made it or where it came from or why it's there, we just look at it.

Here's a few more Star Trek fan art pieces. I hand-letter everything because I don't have all the fonts or the knowledge of how to do it another way (that I'm satisfied with.) I've always got time for Odo/Quark/O'Brien tributes.
A mash up illustration of Odo and Columbo labeled as "columbodo"Miles O'brien with his hands on his hips with his sleeves rolled up. Around him is the statement "Endure and Thrive like you are Miles F'n O'Brien" Odo and Quark having a stare-down with each other. Quark is amused. Around them in a circle is the text: Sometimes your nemesis and your best friend are the same weird little goblin.

Yes. The USSR directly -with soldiers, tanks, and planes- fought fascists in Spain while the UK and France fucked the Republic over. Stalin fucked the Republic over too! But my point is that the USSR is on a very short list of countries who directly fought nazis pre-1939. Important context.
