Something I just noticed about the 1979 BCP's Daily Office Lectionary today: the Friday After Ascension Day (Year 2) assigns the concluding sayings of the Sermon on the Mount. That's a beautiful placement.

Ascension Day: Psalms 8, 47 • 24, 96 / Dan 7.9-14 / Heb 2.5-18 / Matt 28.16-20

There's a lot of temptation for the clergy among us to try to carefully articulate why our traditions oppose the death penalty for Biblical and theological reasons. Which is fine, I guess. But it's far more salient to flat-out say "if you WANT to watch an execution, your soul is in danger."

Seems badly worded. Isn't the whole point for Catholics that the eucharist IS the real presence? That what guarantees this real presence is a miraculous change of substance transforming the identity of the elements? "Contains" feels more Lutheran, albeit still too clinical

In the grand scheme of things, in the spectrum of how this text is discussed, I'm more comfortable describing the Sermon as a handbook for discipleship ("Third Use") rather than a mirror for sin ("First Use") bc the latter feels like it cashes out into a copout to dismiss its claim on us

The two truths I hold at once regarding the Sermon on the Mount are that it's impossible but we still have to try to obey it. I guess a parallel to how to interpret/obey the Sermon is the three classical Protestant Uses of the Law. They should all matter co-equally for the Sermon

For me, I like the Theological Bible Commentary better because it's less conservative but not unorthodox. The NIV Application's strength is the synergy it has with the multivol. Commentary (which has been around for a long time) and a study Bible (NIV Appl. Bible)
