This year has all been measures to bring it back to Labour vs the Tories, who at least somewhat play by agreed rules and can mostly be coerced, as a way of fending off the molten nightmare scenario that is government by anyone else, people who would not be inclined to listen at all.

So on the one hand Labour has made the mostly correct assessment that pensioners don't really vote for them anyway so they can punish them, but has incorrectly assumed any other age cohort is remotely interested in them and that some of us like our parents who are almost retirement age.

Opponents of rent controls typically argue that rent controls would lead to landlords selling up. Of course that presents risks. But it also presents a historic opportunity. Because when a landlord sells, the home does not vanish – only the owner changes!

None of these conditions hold in the private rented sector. Shelter is non-substitutable. Few renters can 'exit the market' without becoming homeless. And decades of record-high rents & house prices haven't sparked the building boom neoclassical theory predicts.

Assurances will have been made offscreen - they always are - so I’d guess the upshot here is that the triple lock on pensions is a goner; we will get some faff-arsed, wholly inadequate will-this-do version of a personal care system, and we will get perfunctory efforts to rejoin lesser EU programmes.
