The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

A little Roman octopus to wish you a happy week! 🐙❤️ From a Roman villa mosaic at Villaquejida, León, Spain. Limestone, AD 100-200. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a mosaic fragment from the floor of a Roman villa in Spain, dated AD 100-200s. It depicts a stylised octopus using red, yellow, white, and black limestone tesserae, against an off-white background. The front-facing octopus appears almost cartoon-like, with a large red and white head and body outlined in black. Its yellow circular eyes are outlined in black with a central black dot which stare out at the viewer. Below the head and body are eight writhing arms.

This octopus and other fragmentary animal mosaics were discovered in the 19th century at the Hermitage of Santa Colomba, Villaquejida, León, which had been built on the site of a Roman villa.

Thanks to @sarobertson.bsky.social for clipping this. The purported manifesto is an incel critique of capitalism with calls for a revolution to remake society into a misogynist hell. It takes ideas from the left and right but the common thread is a hatred of how women live their lives in the West.

Everyone is so used to products being from either a top 100 global company trying to establish a new market monopoly, or a startup trying to go x1000, that they can't understand that sometimes it's possible for someone to just release something that a few people will buy and get value out of it

If you forget to soften butter, you can just run it through a cheese grater. The greatly increased surface area gets you the same effect of having softened the butter for nearly all use cases that ask for softened but not melted butter.

Perched quietly above the shoreline, this purple martin looked almost unreal in the soft coastal light tonight. Its feathers shifted between deep violet, cobalt, and midnight blue depending on how the light hit them.
A purple martin perched on top of a weathered wooden post against a soft pale grey background. The bird’s feathers shimmer with deep violet-blue and cobalt tones, with layered feather detail visible along the wings and chest. A small catchlight reflects in the bird’s dark eye while tiny plants grow from cracks in the aged wood below it.

Anne of Green Gables is incredibly popular in Japan. That popularity all began due to a friendship between two women, one of whom escaped the pain and loneliness of war in Japan by reading about 19th century Prince Edward Island. This is the story. 📸 Huffington Post 🧵 1/12

For non-Canadians: Bill 21 is a law in Quebec which bans any public employees from wearing "religious symbols". While this theoretically bans things like crucifix necklaces, in practice it bans hijabs, turbans, kippahs, etc. and has largely been used to ban non-Christian POC from public service.
