New research out today! Some lizards lose their ears over the course of evolutionary history. This isn’t uncommon for fossorial species, like snakes and other limbless lizards. But, other instances often go without explanation. We look at one such instance, in a group known as the “sand lizards.”

Congrats @sicb-dcb-dvm.bsky.social Division of #Vertebrate #Morphology D. Dwight Davis Award for Best student talk: Miranda Margulis Ohnuma for work on Testing for functional regionalization in the #snake vertebral column sicb.org/sicb-news/co...
Miranda noted: I am a vertebrate paleontologist and second-year PhD student in the Bhullar Lab in Yale University’s Earth and Planetary Sciences department. My thesis research investigates the origins and persistence of the tetrapod body plan, with a focus on the limb girdles and regionalized spine. I presented a new perspective on snake intervertebral joint anatomy, which uses ex-vivo XROMM to reconcile the apparent conflict between regionalized vertebral morphology and consistent joint function along the snake spine.

Gunther von Hagens, creator of Body Worlds and plastination, dies aged 81
Controversial anatomist’s body ‘will definitely be plastinated’ in line with his wishes, a spokesperson said Gunther von Hagens, who developed a technique for permanently preserving human bodies in rigid states and toured the world with his controversial Body Worlds exhibition, has moved closer to fulfilling a long-held wish to be sliced up and displayed in a museum after dying aged 81. “It is with deep sadness that the family and the Institute for Plastination announce the passing of Dr Gunther von Hagens, inventor of plastination and creator of the Body Worlds exhibitions,” the German anatomist’s institute said in a statement on Monday. The Office of Management and Budget is proposing to put politicians instead of scientists in charge of scientific funding. The move could stifle research that doesn't fit the President's agenda. Other countries have tried similar things. My story on one attempt: www.sciencenews.org/article/omb-...

Here’s what happens when you put politicians in charge of science
Proposed federal rules would rely on political appointees to decide how a lot of U.S. science gets done. History shows the consequences of such actions.

The National Science Foundation has halted for at least the rest of the week the work of review panels, in which outside experts rate the merit of proposals for scientific research.

The NSF, a $10 billion agency that spreads research dollars across the country in quantities both large and small, issued a brief statement Monday that added minimal clarity to a situation that had alarmed researchers.
