1 week till @sebiology.bsky.social in Florence! Join me for my keynote for symposium A12: "Digital Resilience: Immortalising Biodiversity Through 3D Anatomical Models". Take a walk through the long grass of 3D imaging with me & collect all of my critter cards along the way! 4pm Tues in Modulo 2.1 🩻
A black background with green cartoon at the bottom of the image. Above the grass are 7 card backs that are styled purple with the radiation symbol in the middle. A "critter card" for the spiny lumpsucker in the top middle of the image gives access to a 3D model via tiny link and QR code. Surrounding the critter cards are silhouettes of 7 other 3D models that represent other 3D models in the set.

The Pacific spiny lumpsucker, an inefficient swimmer but a highly efficient suction cup. The pelvic fins have evolved into a strong suction disk on the belly, giving it the ability to anchor itself to substrates. Plate-like structures called "tubercles" provide defense against predators.
A 3D model made from a micro-CT scan of a Pacific spiny lumpsucker, with the skeleton rendered in light brown/beige and the tubercles rendered in a gradient of colors, beginning with pink at the head, and changing from purple, to blue, to teal as you move towards the tail. Outline of the body is rendered in white and transparent. Shown in antero-lateral view (top), anterior view (bottom left), and left lateral view of the head (bottom right). Scale bar at the bottom right is 5 mm.A 3D model made from a micro-CT scan of a Pacific spiny lumpsucker, with the skeleton rendered in light brown/beige and the tubercles rendered in a gradient of colors, beginning with pink at the head, and changing from purple, to blue, to teal as you move towards the tail. This yellow spotted river turtle from the Florida Museum of Natural History was collected in Colombia in 1957. It's likely it was exploited by the pet trade, as it was once common for people to drill holes in the marginal scutes of the shell to tether the turtle & stop it from wandering away (1/2)
3D Renderings of a contrast-enhanced CT scan of a yellow spotted river turtle, colored in brown (least dense tissues), green (medium density tissues), and yellow (high density tissues). A dorsal view is shown at the top of the image, and a ventral view is shown at the bottom of the image.

Every year UTCT teaches NSF sponsored short courses on high-resolution X-ray CT, taught by UTCT staff (including me!). Applications for the 2025 courses are now open! See below for the biological/paleontological course info, & we also have a geological one. If you'd like to apply, send me a DM 🩻☢️🦴
Text that reads: The University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility (UTCT) will host a short course on the fundamentals of acquisition, visualization, and analysis of high-resolution X-ray CT (HRXCT) data for biological and paleontological specimens June 2-4, 2025 in Austin, TX.
This short course will present an overview of the acquisition, interpretation, 3D visualization and analysis of HRXCT data. This will be followed by hands-on training focused on 3D visualization, surface extraction, and segmentation (e.g., endocasts, digital dissection) including deep learning. Covered programs include ImageJ, Dragonfly, and 3D Slicer/SlicerMorph.
This course is sponsored in part by NSF and funds are available to help cover the cost of travel, lodging, and meals. There is no charge to attend. Because we will not be able to accept all applicants, preference will be given to those who have/will have HRXCT data for the course and have a demonstrated need for immediate application of the skills learned. Students and early-career researchers receive priority. Participants are invited to bring their own HRXCT data, or to have specimens scanned (at a significant discount) at UTCT prior to the course.
