My own salary came up at my last doctor's appt, and she expressed extreme shock that I make far less than her receptionist. "I thought you made over six figures, you're a scientist!" Yeah, no, not even close! But there's this pervasive idea that science and museums are these well-funded entities.

I think it is very telling that we get news of two planned museum closures by university institutions with minimal notice. Clearly they know the moves will be publicly unpopular, and the apparent solution is to give people as little time to organize as possible and set it up as a fait accompli.

Finally getting around to studying some old specimens for the first time this #FossilFriday. These eurypterids were discovered in the 1960s and almost certainly represent new species. Discoveries such as this really highlight the importance of museum collections as records of life on our planet. 🧪⚒️

Daily mollusk. Monoplacophora are their own class of mollusks. Just like gastropods and bivalves. They are small and fragile and live in quite deep water, so they are not well known. Until the 1950s they were thought to be an extinct Paleozoic group. 🧪
