New research out today! Some animals have three eyes?! This eye isn't for "seeing" per se, but it's connected to a part of the brain responsible for regulating body temperature. So if you see a lizard basking out in the sun to get warm, oftentimes this eye plays a central role. But there's more...

New research out today! Some lizards lose their ears over the course of evolutionary history. This isn’t uncommon for fossorial species, like snakes and other limbless lizards. But, other instances often go without explanation. We look at one such instance, in a group known as the “sand lizards.”

It is with the heaviest heart that I say Hans Sues has passed away. He was an excellent postdoctoral advisor, and I’m so grateful to have even had a fraction of time with his mentorship. I know our community is heartbroken at this loss.

Hearing evolved in most amniotes by the late Permian, but its origins in reptiles remain poorly understood. Here, using biomechanical and morphometric analyses, the authors show that high frequency hearing likely had evolved in reptiles by the late Permian.

Next Thursday, May 22nd, all members of the Society are invited to join SVP president Stuart Sumida in the first in a series of town hall meetings designed to let members discuss opportunities, questions, concerns, and planning that impact our Society.  The topic of the first town hall meeting will be our November 2025 meeting in Birmingham, England and the challenges of planning our future meetings. This week I played among the Carboniferous floras and found these beauties for #FossilFriday 🌱 These aren’t flowering plants, and there wouldn’t be flowers for hundreds of millions more years. But they’re no less stunning imo. Housed at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

I’m no mineralogist, but I’d regret not showing off this incredible copper sheet for #MineralMonday. Weighing in at 324 lbs from Michigan, it’s one of the largest copper sheets in the world. It’s enough to coat ~2.5 million pennies! On display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
