This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.

Oooh, boy, is DIGGER a missed opportunity. Desperate to be DR. STRANGELOVE but unable to make the satire sharp enough or funny enough. Simultaneously thinks it's smart and the audience is too dumb. Riz Ahmed and John Goodman strike it right. My review is live: thefilmmaven.com/digger-revie...

“You think we’re getting a little too close to Meta?” Georges asked. “I’m not afraid of the sun. You know — Icarus? I’ll get as close to the sun as I can.”

Went to the Wendy's drive-thru, where a pregnant young woman brought out my order while carrying her other baby in her arms. As a barely self-employed freelance writer, I was struck by her smile and politeness in the face of being clearly exhausted. We all deserve a better today. Think big. Vote.

There's no mystery about how the difficult work of building a liberal/progressive majority can be accomplished. It was done once before, by assembling a broad coalition comprised of cohorts of Americans who disagreed about many, many things, but came together to remake the nation for the better.

At the most basic level, government-mandated health insurance hit corporations’ bottom lines. Forcing them to fund the well-being of their workers cut into profit margins. They also feared it would open the door to state-mandated minimum wages, restricted working hours and stricter safety laws. /3

Cartoon from Puck depicting John D. Rockefeller as a business despot, 1901. Corporate opposition to the American Association for Labor Legislation model bill in the 1910s was a highly organized, heavily financed counter-offensive. Industrialists and commercial interests viewed the bill as a terrifying precedent for state-mandated wealth redistribution and government interference in private enterprise. Major corporations formed specialized research and lobbying fronts. The most prominent was the National Industrial Conference Board, founded in 1916 as a coalition of American industrial associations. The NICB’s primary mission regarding healthcare was to conduct economic “studies” designed to “prove” that compulsory health insurance would bankrupt American industry. They flooded state legislatures with reports arguing that a 40% employer payroll tax contribution would artificially inflate the cost of American-made goods.
