Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will appeal a Queens judge’s order to rip out the 31st Street bike lane in Astoria, he told me at a presser in Greenpoint this morning. He calls the decision “very disappointing,“ adding that he usually avoids riding on 31st because it’s unsafe.

More than 48 hours after the snow stopped, one of the busiest bike lanes in the system impassable or dangerous in large swaths. Flushing Ave continuation of Kent Ave bike lane. It ends after I almost fell on ice and started biking in the road. #bikenyc @nyc-dot.bsky.social @nyc.streetsblog.org

A repost of our short showing blocked and narrow crosstown #bikenyc lanes. It is probably the biggest challenge on the streets of Manhattan to build ample sized lanes that aren't clogged by illegal parking making them unsafe. And yeah, these were all filmed in one day. Not an unusual experience.

One surprising piece of research I found when writing the book was that while the number of kids biking & walking to school has dropped by a lot since 1969, the number of kids living within a mile of their school has only gone down by about 15%.

This tragedy did not need to happen. There should be a wide protected bike lane on the west side of Riverside Drive. It's a heavily used route for cyclists going to the George Washington Bridge. Plus, making it safer would alleviate some of the pressure and conflicts on the greenway.

We’ve read the decision. According to the ruling, fire officials complained the 🚲 lane would make it tough to position a ladder truck But look at the street! With curb parking & subway structure overhead *you can’t get a ladder in there now* The new bike lane would allow that to work [more👇]

Something really good thing this could unlock is deliberate bike+transit installations. Other than CitiBike near transit, NYC doesn't have any real developed bike & ride program. We need secure bike parking (& connecting bikeways) at outer ends of subways & rail like the Port Washington branch

Good that this is (finally) moving. But let's note that 500 sites in a city our size is a toe in the water, nothing like meeting citywide needs. London is an order of magnitude ahead of this target already (~5,000 sites, and not counting 🚲 parking at transit sites - more of a no-brainer there)
