Happy birthday to Mary Shelley, born on this day in 1797 📕 At 18, she began writing Frankenstein, helping to invent a whole genre and giving us one of literature’s most iconic monsters. Not a bad legacy.
Black and white etching portrait of Mary Shelley. Her portrait is set in an oval, she is wearing a black off the shoulder gown. Her hair appears to be a dark brown and falls around her jawbone.

Abegail Morley's 'Houseplant daughter' is a poignant look at depression as it takes a form you might not expect. Yet it feels right at home there. Read it here: inksweatandtears.co.uk/abegail-morl... #InkSweatAndTears #Poetry #MentalHealthMatters

Text: Houseplant Daughter

At noon my houseplant daughter converts
carbon dioxide into sugar, and I carry on telling her
about things artificial, colour, I say,
and mime stirring a cake, and hearts,

Can I draw your attention to 'Skinny Dipping in Tiger Country', the debut collection by @maithreyikarnoor.bsky.social. Much to enjoy in it; you can tell there's a twinkle in this poet's eye. Was particularly taken by the below poem. The book's out on Valley Press: valleypressuk.com/products/ski...
Imperial Lather
My grandfather went to great lengths to acquire the Imperial Leather soap
- a rarity and a wasteful luxury in our Marathi-speaking
Kannada town.
Indian soaps, he said, were too hard and abrasive and smelled too much of jasmine or rose.
The soap had a sticker on it and when one was worn down a new one was pressed onto its slivers sticker and all.
Bar upon new bar of soap went into the dish
until the whole thing was reduced to an unholy lump scattered with black and red stickers.
'Does it,' I asked him 'make our skin like leather?'
'It is lather misspelt,' he said.
"The English are bad spellers.'
Grandfather may have been an imperialist.

@emteepoetry.bsky.social #PromptCombo #Beach Here is one first published in similar form in Dreich Zoo Collection.
Stranded Seal

Sea foam
candy floss high
whipped into the penny arcade,
sand- caked spines shivered
twisted in the roughness of towels
before tumble driers
made us soft.

The boy,
storm blown skittish,
ran nut brown on shale
gulling his way
from suck to pebble pull,
the relics of our sunny afternoon
were all his world.

Then we saw grace pole-axed
by warm flanks
heaving a last breath,
but we could not hear his sobbing
for the offshore wind.
