Terry Riley’s In C is a composition where any number of musicians improvisationally play 53 melodic fragments in the key of C. This web app lets you play multiple In C live performances layered on top of each other. In C to the power of In C, if you will. [incync.space]

For an engaging, humorous, and well-researched take on Project Plowshare in general and the history of the RULISON and RIO BLANCO experiments in particular, be sure to check out @berincole.bsky.social’s superb online comic book (which is also available in print).

Project Plowshare: Nuclear Testing in Colorado
In 1969 and 1973, the Atomic Energy Commission detonated nuclear bombs deep underground in Western Colorado, to try and release natural gas. These tests were part of Project Plowshare -- an initiative...

Nuclear fracking, anyone? Today in 1969, in the second of three Project Plowshare experiments (RULISON), a 40-kiloton nuclear device was detonated in a 8,425-foot shaft near Grand Valley, Colorado, to stimulate the flow of natural gas. The gas was—surprise!—too radioactive to sell.
An official black and white photograph showing the canister (with "LASL Rulison" painted vertically on its midsection) containing the RULISON test device being lowered into its emplacement shaft from a crane. Four men in hard hats and light-colored work clothes are clustered around and looking at the bottom of the canister. A hill with scrub brush is visible in the background. An annotated black and white graphic showing the location of the test shaft and its distance from Grand Valley, Rifle, Grand Junction, and Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Enlarged drawings (in circles, as under a magnifying glass) designate ground zero, the control point, and the observation area.A cutaway color graphic showing the location of the underground detonation relative to the surface and layers of gas sands and shales, and how the explosion would fracture the surrounding rock, freeing the natural gas.

A couple of my new stickers from @berincole.bsky.social (aka Little Brain Comics)
Two stickers on a table. The first shows a book with an orange cover with a face on it and a speech bubble that says, "that thing you thought was bad? turns out it's way worse than you thought!" At rhe bottom of the sticker it reads, "I ❤️ history." The second sticker shows a cartoon brain holding a yellow sign saying "little brain comics!"

Excellent long thread, by a cartoonist who specializes in nonfiction graphic novels, and who has read both books. (Something that is, but shouldn't be, a rare distinction among people commenting on Cleves' accusations against Walden.)

Glad to see someone write up something comprehensive about this. A lot of historians I know had very defensive reactions when Cleves first made her claims. Me included! although as a historian and cartoonist, the problem seemed to be how different disciplines deal with citations, not plagiarism

I hope comic artists don’t think that they are creative & historians just “state facts.” There‘s so much work & creativity (not to mention $& used for archive trips) that goes into finding & bringing to life unsung figures. Read a book & want to make a comic? Cool! Pay for rights or collaborate.

It’s not that hard. If you want to do a history comic, figure out if you’re taking something that someone *painstakingly pieced together * in the archives. If so, ask to license their book OR credit them at start of book OR don’t use THE SAME TITLE as the historian you based your work on. 🗃️

Also, to stick up for my fellow cartoonists, there is a lot of transformative work involved in taking material from a primary or secondary source and turning it into a page of comics/sequential art that is almost impossible to reflect in a citation

B. Erin Cole @berincole.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
as a cartoonist and historian, I've seen many history comics that are VERY casual about citations. Citations are so important: they thank others for their work, tell the reader who you see yourself in relationship to and how you developed your thought, and provide roadmaps for future researchers.
