In addition - the sketches are not racist, and it is a sign of a broader malaise that we now treat “jokes about racists and racism” as indistinguishable from “racist jokes”.

Nothing tests how well you have remembered your school French quite like trying to convince a mechanic in Calais to change a tire for you at 11.50am on a Saturday. We muddled through together.

The headline is entirely accurate - but unlike the Times’s motivation, it should instead be read as a reason to put more time, resource and effort into Net Zero to smooth over the risks during the transition period. Just like every other major societal transition in human history.

They should build loads of data centers all over the place that contain huge quantities of books that people can borrow for free if they fill out a form to get a data center card and promise to return the books on time and don’t make too much noise in the data center.

Higher taxes that most people will pay? Or spending cuts that most people will feel? That's it. Pick one. If your answer is "government waste" or "tax the rich", then you're part of the problem. The strategy of taxing "other people" has run out of road.

Moved two weeks ago from a town to a nearby village. We’re on a quiet road, with five other girls close to our daughter’s age. After school and at weekends they knock on each other’s doors, ride bikes, climb trees. I didn’t know this life existed any more - we have rediscovered something precious.

James Merril’s poem “Christmas Tree,” written while he was dying of AIDS. 1995.
JAMES MERRILL
CHRISTMAS TREE
From loes torn hamin Had been fed, looked after, kept still, Meant, I knew— of course I knew - That it would be only a matter of weeks,
That there was nothing more to do. Warmly they took me in, made much of me,
The point from the start was to keep my spirits up. I could assent to that. For honestly, It did help to be wound in jewels, to send Their colors flashing forth from vents in the deep
Fragrant sables that cloaked me head to foot. Over me then they wove a spell of shining —
Purple and silver chains, eavesdripping tinsel, Amulets, milagros: software of silver,
A heart, a little girl, a Model T Two staring eyes. Then angels, trumpets, BUD and BEA (The children's names) in clownlike capitals, Somewhere a music box whose tiny song
Played and replayed I ended before long By loving. And in shadow behind me, a primitive IV To keep the show going. Yes, yes, what lay ahead
Was clear: the stripping, the cold street, my chemicals
Plowed back into the Earth for lives to come — No doubt a blessing, a harvest, but one that doesn't bear,
Now or ever, dwelling upon. To have grown so thin.
Needles and bone. The little boy's hands meeting
About my spine. The mother's voice: Holding up wonderfully!
No dread. No bitterness. The end beginning. Today's
Dusk room aglow For the last time
With candlelight. Faces love-lit,
Gifts underfoot.
Still to be so poised, so
Receptive. Still to recall, to praise.

If I had a case to refer to the CCRC, and was absolutely adamant that it wasn’t just a publicity stunt, I probably wouldn’t issue a press release stating that I was going to personally hand deliver my documents to their offices. I’d probably just email them, or stick them in the post.
