How can the EU finance more common priorities without putting ever more pressure on national budgets? A new Global Citizen report explores 6 options for new EU own resources. We contributed to 2: taxes on luxury consumption and intra-EU aviation. (1/9)

On the way back, we treated ourselves to the Caledonian Sleeper, crossing back through the majestic Scottish Highlands. Ironically, the railway line through the highlands is not electrified – so while coaches run on electricity, the trains still use diesel.

And they can cover an entire shift on one charge – we left Edinburgh with a battery 62% charged, arrived in Fort William with still close to 30% left, after four hours winding through the highlands. With just below 1 kWh per km, they get up to three such journeys out of one charge.

He told me the vehicle is heavier than diesel buses, but drives very smoothly with lots of thrust. They also found the (Chinese-manufactured) buses more reliable than their diesel predecessors.

The ride itself was nice and quiet, but what was really spectacular was the scenery rather than the vehicle. When we got off, I chatted with the bus driver, Paul, who had trained and worked on diesel buses – but would not want to go back.

Then the train to Edinburgh. From there on to Fort William was a particular treat: we did the iconic route through the Scottish Highlands by electric coach. Electric buses are common in European cities now, but travelling on an electric overland coach was a first for me.

The route here: direct Berlin-Amsterdam train, with one night stopover in beautiful Haarlem. From there, the overnight ferry to Newcastle, which featured not only great food but also a professional nature guide (no whale or dolphin sighting, but plenty of birds and knowledge).
Beautiful and iconic Haarlem Central Station - a bit of steampunk vibes from an era where train stations were still built as cathedrals of the modern age.

We keep up with our family #slowtravel tradition to explore remote (and beautiful) corners of Europe without flying. This year it's Scotland, where we just arrived on the Isle of Skye. The journey was lovely and easy, with a special treat at the end. 🧵
Now as then, Scotland is an excellent choice for a travel destination, and railways a great way to get around - now minus the steam and coal.

Why would we want bigger cars in UK, seeing what they’ve done in US? Sleepwalking to a situation where SUVs are the new normal, because govt too scared of right wing press who scream ‘war on motorists’ at every opportunity, will kill children. Shame on all who abet this.

... and then I recall that my home district Berlin-Spandau announced a "Bike&Ride-Offensive", ramping up bicycle storage at the #Spandau station (one of Berlin's busiest commuter hubs). Announcing storage to be built at some point in the future. For - lo and behold - no less than 20 (!) bicycles.

And just because, why not, the whole thing is situated right in front of the Central Station where it sits underneath a canal and a little harbour. And then you realise that this is only one of the four (!) similar-sized storage places they have at the station. Number five in the pipeline.

And what can I say - not only did they invest 60 millions to create safe, dry, cheap, convenient storage for 7,000 bikes. They also built it as a cathedral, with great architecture (and usability), and including some artwork into the building.

I confess: Besides being a climate policy wonk, one of my other guilty pleasures is #bicycle #infrastructure. So when I had some time between trains in Amsterdam, connecting from Berlin to London, I took a look at the (still relatively) new bicycle storage at Amsterdam Centraal.

and - of course - painful to contrast such thoughts with the German reality, where the initial response is to subsidise against the market by lowering road fuel taxes and air ticket levies. And rather than double down on the obvious (electrify, expand clean power) - dream of cloud cuckoo solutions.

So I just learned about the 1986 airplane hijacking attempt in #Oulu, #Finland, and now you too are going to. Because I burst out laughing in a train reading about it. It has: ✔️beer (lots)! ✔️hijinks! ✔️weird occult Nazis! ✔️✔️✔️"HYPNOTIC-MAGNETIC GAZE!" Why oh why this isn't a movie yet! (a THREAD.)
Pekka Siitoin (1944-2003), the Reichsführer of Finland (self-employed), a satanist and a "raunchologist" in his latter years. In the photo, an old man dressed in a red cape and shorts, wearing long "horns" on his head and holding a wooden cross upside down, is making a hand gesture. He is sitting on a porch and looks very, very silly.

Among other things, he declared he would be the first Finn to have sex with an "ufo woman," and also knew nifty spells like how to drink a lot of booze but stay sober ("drink two glasses of milk and eat 200 g of cheese. Then say: 'Oh cow, in You I trust.'")

But he also was convicted of a bombing and arson of a printer of the newspaper of the Finnish Communist Party. Fuck Nazis.
