The verb ‘to wait’ comes from Old French, but French in turn borrowed it from the ancestor of Dutch ‘wachten’.
Their word family include ‘wake’, ‘woke’, ‘watch’, and, via Latin, ‘vigilant’, ‘vigour’, ‘vegetation’, and ‘vegetable’.
