Being concerned about the rising climate impact of cooling should not be automatically conflated with efforts to deny cooling to people who need it. 3. There are many ways to address the impact of cooling & we should pursue & invest in all of them.

Look, Americans, British homes aren't designed with air conditioning in mind. Our architecture values other things: heat retention, space management, trapdoors, automated breakfast-serving mechanisms which can be operated by a literal dog

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 included, for the first time, a tax credit to make energy storage cheaper, which also made it cheaper to deploy solar and storage together. The IRA also had credits or loan guarantees for manufacturing and deploying energy storage in America. IRA made line go up.

What grid and geothermal hardware share is that they're opportunities for new manufacturing investment in the United States. Seizing these opportunities requires supportive public policy, regional economic coordination, and targeted new research. neiscenter.substack.com/p/seizing-am...

Next-generation geothermal is an emerging technology facing a future supply-chain risk: without early investment in specialized equipment, manufacturing capacity may lag deployment just as the industry begins to scale.

B/C ratio goes up if: better targeting at distressed places & high multiplier projects; better design -- avoid too high a ratio of incentives to direct jobs, emphasize incentives that are customized services, use clawbacks; & complement w/ expansive housing supply policies.

This report highlights that the devil is in the details on incentives. Out of these 50 large clean energy projects, the "median" project has benefits>incentive costs by 47% -- but 13 projects have B/C ratio >3, and 7 have B/C < 0.5.

New Upjohn Institute research finds incentives for most large-scale clean energy projects are expected to generate positive economic returns for state residents. But whether residents benefit — and by how much — depends heavily on how deals are designed. Read more: buff.ly/jOUuSl1 #econsky,

Geothermal power is a huge opportunity for the US. Rather than repeating our mistakes with solar, we should move aggressively to build a domestic supply chain to support it. A new report from @rockymtninst.bsky.social:

Next-gen geothermal energy shows increasing promise as a reliable, ready-to-use source of energy in the US — if the equipment supply chain can be built. Manufacturing expertise from the oil and gas industry, targeted policy, and better data can help: ow.ly/lVzs50YWaob

If next-generation geothermal power is to achieve liftoff and scale in the United States, we’ll need a whole lot more geothermal hardware, and we’ll need to harden that hardware for higher-temperature conditions. That’s an opportunity for new manufacturing, and the United States should seize it.

It’s easy to think writing is mainly the transcription of ideas you already have—that is, until you try to write something worthwhile, and you find what you thought were saying transform into something far more interesting in the process. This skips that last step, and that is *not* an improvement.
