what i want out of the next two years of an at least partially democrat-controlled congress is robust dossiers on every criminal in this administration ready for relevant agency heads and state governments at 12pm on january 20, 2028. impeachments are one avenue to help build them

something we have learned is that the criminal justice system, even when you’re not dragging your feet, is pretty slow - especially for complicated financial crimes, of which there are A Lot you’d better be ready to hit the ground running if you want resolution before the next election cycle

But I think it's a mistake to use that to conclude they're crazy, delusional, or just engaged in hype to make money. As in climate, there is evidence in the world to assess and there is a ton of mounting real-world evidence that this is a technology that is getting much more powerful and dangerous.

That's certainly a problem for some pockets of silicon valley, but the people who do LLM evals tend to actually dig pretty hard into how you measure performance on specific kind of tasks. The idea that there's just *no way* to measure, say, the quality of medical advice, feels defeatist.

People think they've made a great argument when referencing Uber and its initial price subsidy. But if Uber could've consistently halved the underlying cost of the same ride every 6 months there would never have been a price increase!

As to the question "How could you possibly measure something as subjective as intelligence?" Legions of good psyshometricians have gone deep into these questions and done scholarship that deserves respect, and doesn't deserve to be dismissed as eugenics.

benergetic.bsky.social @benergetic.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
If you don't quantify intelligence, you can't detect subtle neurotoxic effects at the population level. Low-dose lead, mild iodine deficiency, valproate in pregnancy, etc. The damage of these was invisible until someone measured cognition at scale. This is not eugenics or ranking.

I'm not really sure where this gets us. Bad people can invent immensely useful things (e.g. Fritz Haber). And many of the key people who developed IQ (notably Wechsler, Binet and Stern) were not eugenicist at all. Are you saying that intelligence quantification itself is inherently eugenicist?

"Is intelligence heritable" is an important and valid research question. Careful scholars have worked super hard to separate nurture from nature and try to measure this. Asserting that nobody can be anti-racist and still study heritability of traits cedes too much ground to the racists!

benergetic.bsky.social @benergetic.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
I think you're saying that IQ is not a good proxy for intelligence? "IQ" specifically is an invented psychometric, so saying it cannot be represented by a testable single number is a category error.

Ok first of all, now I have G&S stuck in my head so thanks for that Secondly: While "race science" is definitely awful and discredited, I'm pretty surprised to hear you challenge "IQ is heritable". I thought heritability of IQ was one of the more replicated findings in psychology?

If it looks like an Amazon delivery and drives like an Amazon delivery, then it's an Amazon delivery, right? Not according to Amazon. Big companies like Amazon have built a vast network of subcontractors who deliver their packages while shielding them from accountability.
