In 1974, Cornell lecturer Lin Farley began recognizing a pattern in the experiences women shared in her Women and Work course: women were being pushed out of jobs by men’s sexual behavior. Farley coined the term, “sexual harassment.”

It would actually have been conceptually impossible for the Vanderbilt/WashU report to have been peer reviewed because the premise of the report is that we should ignore half a century of peer-reviewed research in the humanities when we assess what they have contributed to knowledge.

Yes! it helps them at the start of the semester to see how everyone else approaches it, and occasionally they respond to each other’s entries and engage in great convos.

Final thoughts: I occasionally respond to their entries (usually to build on what they said or ask an open-ended question) and I also occasionally read excerpts of what they wrote aloud in class. They know going in that everything they post is visible to everyone in the class.

I have them upload their entry (or a picture of it) to the class website every week. They can all see each others’ entries, and my only “grade” is whether they submitted something or not. I have them re-read all of their entries before the final class, and they marvel at how far they’ve come.

I do this with my MA students in every class that I teach. They can type, write, draw; it can be fully-formed prose, bullet points, mind maps, illustrations, whatever. The point is to record their thoughts over the course of the semester. I call it a writing journal and they love it.

It *is* dangerous offloading. It *also* produces bad (i.e, mediocre banal, and uninspiring) scholarship. LLMs can't compile evidence (they lack judgment), identify counterarguments/holes (they extrude comments remixed from thoughts had by other humans), and proofreading is what spellcheck is for.

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

We desperately need to get away from arguments for the humanities that elevate them because of what they do for technology. The humanities should not be understood as service disciplines. They are an extension of us, and that is enough.

FWIW, I don’t think the major problem in my field, or related ones, is that people need to move faster & produce more. I read a lot of papers as part of the job, and I’m increasingly convinced we’d benefit from fewer papers and better ones, not more mediocre work produced ever more “efficiently.”

It’s going to be another banner year (in the words of lying African governments, a “bumper harvest”) for books from authors on the Continent and in its Diaspora! Here’s your list, sorted by month, with all kinds of genres included (including children’s books, at the end of the post). There’s no way I could list every book that’s coming, but here’s what I think is notable—as always, a work in progress, subject to updates.
