Please just want to remind everyone about the reporting (or even public discussion) guidelines around suicide - suicide is not ever caused by any one reason and speculating on (or even announcing) why someone completed suicide is really unhelpful, incl. to people with suicidal ideation

fascinatingly* the French news is translating "Count Binface" as « le Compte Tête-de-Poubelle » rather than « Visage-de-Poubelle) which is, in fairness, more accurate (his entire head is a bin, not just his face) typical British media not asking the important underlying questions * ta gueule
Screenshot from Le Parisien. A photo of Count Binface, a man in a sort of black Darth Vader suit but with a silvery grey cape and a bin on his head with eye slit and mouthhole.

Headline:

In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies. I have translated some of the highlights
A screenshot of Lala and Po from the teletubbies. The screenshot is clearly taken from someone's phone, as the borders of the tv can be seen, as well as glimpses into the apartment behind them. Po is in bed wrapped up in a blanket. The text below them reads "I know you were high at my mother-in-laws funeral..."More screenshots from the Teletubbies. Lala seems to be upset with a terrified Po. the text below reads "Did you kill the dog? Why would you do that?!"A third screenshot from the Teletubbies, this time the same scene as before. Po is wearing an apron while Lala seems to still be upset at him. The text below reads "You're nothing but a failure of a man."

Google develops AI tool that fills missing words in Roman inscriptions
Aeneas program, which predicts where and when Latin texts were made, called ‘transformative’ by historians In addition to sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a freshwater system and public health, the Romans also produced a lot of inscriptions. Making sense of the ancient texts can be a slog for scholars, but a new artificial intelligence tool from Google DeepMind aims to ease the process. Named Aeneas after the mythical Trojan hero, the program predicts where and when inscriptions were made and makes suggestions where words are missing. Continue reading...

Final aside on big tech, btw: the data centre energy use to supply streaming for TikTok, youTube, Netflix, iPlayer, your smart TV , etc, *vastly* outweighs what LLMs use. As does the 'normal' AI power needs to sort search results, scoial media algorithms, online shopping, etc (for now).

Assuming the 10 billion figure is correct, that makes data centre usage is 27 million litres a day. Versus a projected UK shortfall of 5,000 million litres a day by 2065. So 0.5% or so of that projected shortfall. It’s just not a major part of the problem, at all.
