the answer to a lot of election hypotheticals this year is "lol lmao D+12" candidate quality matters, but the number of folks who can overcome that sort of environment is vanishingly small and - depending on the ME-Sen results - may no longer exist

like, this isn’t even an “AI could create that much value” versus “no it can’t” argument - let’s grant the premise, let’s say it does in that world, with these people in charge, unemployment and poverty explode and no safety net is built to handle it

fundamentally the problem that republican candidates are having is that “I am going to stand up to donald trump” is a fundamentally unserious thing to hear from a republican in the year 2026 and every voter knows it

Easily my favorite detail:
There was the incident that became known as "the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with
the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight — which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch
P01 during flight. She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were
integrated into the program.

Black text on white background
"This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.

The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.

Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.

To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity."

The head of the Fraud Task Force unaware of corruption inside the Trump administration, despite it being widely covered in the media. All by design: The Public Integrity unit in DOJ was gutted and has been told to focus on welfare fraud in blue states. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/stop-paper...
The unit is hiring again to focus on “how politicians and state officials facilitate the misuse of taxpayer dollars.” That sounds good — until you realize what this actually means is they plan to go after blue state officials for allegations of welfare fraud. Trump’s circle will remain safe. After all, his former defense lawyer runs the DOJ now.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

“Lynching” in the US is not a singular phenomenon. The lynching you are describing is a “racial terror” lynching. There were “public spectacle lynchings,” which have elements of the former but are not identical. There are also “legal lynchings” which were the summary use of capital punishment.

You know, I have this thing I keep saying about the word "racism," and how on the right in particular, it's not a word that has any real substantive meaning. It's just a word that is taken to signify "bad" somehow So people will say "I'm not a racist, I just think black people are inferior"

Right, and to this point, one traditional explanation for why democracy works, specifically why leaders who lose elections actually agree to give up power, is that elections are a kind of taking-stock for how a civil conflict would go By definition the side that lost the vote has fewer supporters!
