I said this in a thread last night and in a thousand threads before it, but you really are doing the work of those who would destroy democracy and the rule of law when you are a doomer. You can be aware of — and vigorously oppose — the lawlessness of this administration without insisting on doom.

I think she has a 'cuckoo for cocoa puffs' YouTube channel which is both deranged and deeply boring. I still remember listening in disbelief to the disastrous and award winning (for the journalists) interviews she did with BBC local radio stations as it became clear how bad the mini budget was.

Please please please dress the lettuce up and include props - like the Daily Star did with the Liz Truss lettuce. Seen here with a Greggs sausage roll and with a cup of tea.

I loathe Lumo. Shouty staff, bossy signs in the carriages about luggage, over air conditioned, hardly any toilets working, and - every time - failure to reserve a forward facing seat despite them being available. It's also usually only slightly cheaper than LNER which is SO much better.

💯 - this was also Dennis Healey's point when Labour was basically a protest movement and people thought it was enough to 'make a statement'. V odd thinking - parties should want to win elections so they can form a government and enact their policies. Anything less than that is just performance art.

Archer’s resignation from the London mayoral race after it was revealed he lied in court was the thing that got Paul Foot up from his sickbed and contributing again, having first started chronicling Archer’s lies and misdemeanours in 1969. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 992, December 1999.

I presume that by 'internal democracy' you mean members having the opportunity to elect people to positions within the party? Labour has elections that members can vote in at least every year and more frequently if the leader or deputy leader is being replaced and there is more than one candidate.

I spend most of my work days touch typing and have found the Lenovo think pad keyboards to be good. The keys feel heavy enough and depress properly. Also enough of a click when pressed. Or you could buy a proper keyboard with spacious, deep keys and plug it in - think PC World does them.

'Dispiriting' is the right word. And it's not like the Greens don't have a very recent example of the damage antisemitism does to a political party. It should always be rejected because it's evil. But it's also the electoral equivalent of repeatedly punching yourself in the face.

Denis Healey on David Owen
Healey kept a shelf of Spitting Image puppets as latex mementoes of his turbulent political life - among them Margaret Thatcher, Michael Foot, Neil Kinnock and David Owen. As he picked up the Owen puppet and squeezed it to make it squeak, I quoted Owen's view that when Healey stood for the Labour leadership in 1980 he “didn't have the guts to take on the left wing of the party”. “That's absolute bollocks," snorted Healey. “David Owen was a very self-centred person. He was good-looking, he was intelligent, he had immense charm and all these presents were given to him by the good fairy and then the bad fairy came along and tapped him on the shoulder and said, '... but you'll be a shit.”

And just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that people born in England today could only be descended from Normans, Anglo Saxons or Romans. My point is that it has no bearing on the value of a person. The obsession with bloodlines/where people are from is a Nazi thing.

Beans on Toast @beansontoast1.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Absolutely. I think England in particular is a nation of immigrants - even those who were born in England will be descended from Normans, Anglo Saxons, Romans, or further back. There is no such thing as a 'pure' English person. And that's usually seen as a strong point (except by fascists).

Incredible Daily Express story (archive.is/SGo0K) about Sandie Peggie's upcoming action against the RCN, in which she continues to hound Dr Beth Upton who literally moved to the other side of the world to get away from Peggie's harassment, and which includes this frankly baffling paragraph:
Her fight for women's rights has come at significant personal cost. Her father passed away shortly before the first set of tribunal hearings, and in May this year her family dog, a seven-year-old Rottweiler called Broxi, had to be put down.

Yes, agree. It looks more studenty and less residential than 30 years ago - Crawford on Newington Road was a sad loss. I then moved to Salisbury Place above a chippy which by default deep fried pizzas straight from the freezer!

34 years ago for me - the student flats on Blackett Avenue in Newington. Squat modern buildings but a nice setting. 30 years this year since I graduated - can't believe it's that long ago.
